2 Aristotle’s Rhetorical Strategies
Ethos “Rhetoric” is the art or skill of speaking or writing formally and effectively especially as a way to persuade or influence people In other words…it is the art of persuasion Logos Pathos

3 ETHOS Relies on the credibility, character, or reliability of the writer. Often, BUT NOT ALWAYS uses the “testimony” of famous people or professions to sell the product or service.

5 How is this speaker using ETHOS to prove his point that American Muslims need to stop extremist propaganda from reaching their brothers and sisters?

6 PATHOS Appeals to the audience’s emotions, needs, or values.

9 LOGOS The appeal to reason; relies on logic and reason (trying to make things “just make sense”). Often uses facts or statistics.

A commercial shows an image of a happy couple driving a corvette. Cardiologists recommend Ecotrin more than any other brand of aspirin. A magazine ad shows people smiling while smoking cigarettes.

13 Apply it! YOUR TASK: to create a short skit/role play using one of these techniques in one of the following situations: Convince your parents should buy you the new _________. Persuade a teacher to offer you a second chance on an assignment or test. Sway a friend to take YOU with them to Hawaii on vacation and not your other friend. RULES: Groups of 3-4 (NO MORE) You will draw a technique at random Your skit will be presented to the class. Due at the end of class today!

Your task is to create a full-page magazine advertisement for _______ that uses one of Aristotle’s Rhetorical (Persuasive) Strategies. Groups of 3-4 (NO MORE) – we must have 6 groups You will draw a product and strategy at random. Your ad must include both visual and text elements. Your ad will be presented to the class. Due at the end of class today!
