PHYSICS 1P03 Introductory Mechanics Me: Dr. W. Okoń Office: ABB 150 E-mail: okon@physics.mcmaster.ca Office Hours: Wed @ 4-5 pm Thur @ 4-5 pm

Who Are You? Need a physics course Lack requirements for Physics 1B03 Basic knowledge of math: »What is the slope of a line? »What is 2/3 in decimal form? »What is the area of a triangle? Circle? » How to work with simple equations » Basic trigonometry

Who Am I? I studied astronomy at UofT and Mac –I did research on very old star clusters and formation of galaxies Interests outside of science include - ancient and medieval history, ancient coins, Latin, outdoors, photography… I also teach Physics 1D03 this term

The various parts of the course: - The lectures: Monday 11:30-12:20 Wednesday11:30-12:20 Friday 1:30-2:20 - Tutorial:Friday 2:30-13:20

Lecture Notes All lectures for this section will be posted on my website: http://physwww.physics.mcmaster.ca/~okon/1p03/1p03.html Download them BEFORE each class and bring them with you

The Lectures Cover the foundations of physics PowerPoint – posted on web (without quiz solutions!) Demonstrations Discussion groups Exceptions: answers to quick quizzes and quizzes

What you will need, as soon as possible: - The textbook: Physics for Scientists and Engineers, Knight - Your McMaster WebCT account – go to T13 if you need help setting it up - A metric ruler - An “iClicker” (bookstore)

WebCT Web interface to this course: http://webct.mcmaster.ca/ Go to http://getonline.mcmaster.ca/ to get instructions on this page to get WebCT username and password! Physics 1P03 will be in your WebCT list of courses If not, email me! Lecture notes, pre-reading info, and special notices will be posted on the course website (my site)

The various marks in the course: Quick quizzes (iClicker) Quiz at the start of Wednesday’s class Quiz in the middle of Friday’s tutorial session Final Exam

Grade distribution Final exam (December) 50% In-class quizzes 50% Each quiz is weighted equally

Quick Quizzes: - Multiple choice questions during the lecture - Get help from your fellow students or TAs - Use iClicker to register your answers - Answer correctly, get bonus marks Maximum amount of bonus marks is 3% on final grade

The quizzes: Typically 4 questions:  3 on material from the last class  1 on the assigned reading for the current class Quizzes will be marked out of one less than the number of questions If you end up with an average of 125% on your quizzes, you can carry over the extra marks to your final exam You cannot get a final grade higher than a grade point of 12

Academic Integrity: Examples of behaviour that will get you into trouble: - Using someone else’s iClicker - Looking anywhere other than at your quiz - Writing after quiz is over - Using a calculator on a quiz - Getting someone else to write your quiz - Cheating on final exam

Getting Help and Studying Discuss questions and problems with each other. Form study groups. Explaining a concept to someone else helps you think more deeply about it Physics Drop-In Center in basement of Thode Library is open 9:00 – 5:00 Monday to Friday WebCT discussion forums (with your peers and TAs) Moderated WebCT discussion forums (with a TA) Beginning of Thursday tutorial session (with a TA)

Missed a Quiz? If you have a valid reason, go to the Office of the Associate Dean of your faculty and get a missed work form. This will allow me to put the marks for the missed (written) quiz onto your final exam. Bonus marks are a bonus, so you can’t get those back if you miss them the first time (quick quiz).

To do for next class Get the textbook and the iClicker from the bookstore Sign up for this class on WebCT and read the course outline (found on the course website). Register your iClicker online at iclicker.com/registration Read section 1.9 of your text  pay attention to order of magnitude estimation!
