2. How to Read the Rubric – Overall Development
Voice – Do you hear a person behind the words?
Fluent – Sentences seem naturally composed.
Purpose – It is an expository essay.
Audience – It is written towards a particular audience.
6 paper – WOW paper! I can’t believe a middle school student wrote this!
5 paper – I really want to give this a 6 but I feel it’s lacking in a certain area.
4 paper – All the elements are present but it lacks voice.
3 paper – A bit too general/repetitive
2 paper – I think they were confused by the topic
1 paper – Too short, Completely off topic

3. How to Read the Rubric - Organization
Organization – Has a clear beginning, middle, and end.
Conclusion – Provides closure. It is clear the essay has ended.
Transitions – Natural transitions between paragraphs.
6 paper – WOW! That essay flowed so well. Intro and Conclusion are amazing.
5 paper – I really want to give this paper a 6 but it’s lack in a certain area.
4 paper – Transitions are common, seems a bit unorganized.
3 paper – Transitions are bad or gone, Shifts in their focus.
2 paper – Resembles free-writing, Shifting in focus often.
1 paper – Too short, lacks focus.

4. How to Read the Rubric - Support
Support – How the writer develops their main points.
6 paper – WOW! The support provided is just extraordinary.
5 paper – Strong Details but it’s lacking in a way.
4 paper – Adequate Details, Relevant Details.
3 paper – Details not elaborated on. Details seem to be missing.
2 paper – Too few details.
1 paper – No details given or they are irrelevant.

5. How to Read the Rubric – Sentence Structure
Sentence Structure – How I write sentences. Are there unintentional fragments and run- ons? Do I vary my sentence lengths? Do I include a variety of sentence types?
6 paper – WOW! The sentences are beautifully constructed.
5 paper – I want to give this a 6 but it’s missing something.
4 paper – Some sentence variety, some errors
3 paper – Little sentence variety, multiple errors, lots of short simple sentences.
2 paper – No sentence variety, Serious errors.
1 paper – Too short to determine, no sense of how to write a sentence.

6. How to Read the Rubric – Word Choice
Vocabulary – Is the student using higher level vocabulary words?
Word Choice – Does the student vary their words? Use stronger, descriptive words.
6 paper – WOW! The vocabulary is so sophisticated.
5 paper – I really want to give it a 6 but I feel it’s missing something.
4 – Attempts to use rich language, some words used incorrectly.
3 – Simplistic vocabulary.
2 – Simplistic vocabulary, errors in word choice.
1 – Limited vocabulary, too short to evaluate.

6 paper – No errors at all. Ok, maybe one or two is ok.

4 paper – Some errors which do NOT interfere with communication.

1 paper – Too brief to evaluation, Severe mechanical errors.
