The form of the past perfect simple
Positive Negative Interrogative I had worked. I had not worked. Had you worked? had you worked? You had not worked You had worked

NOTE I had worked = I‘d worked He had worked = He‘d worked
I had not = I hadn't worked He had not = He hadn’t worked

Examples Had you finished the job? No, I hadn't finished yet. Yes, I had already finished. She‘d just finished her job.

The past participle of regular verbs is: Examples Rule play - played visit - visited finish -finished Verb + ed

The past participle of irregular verbs can't be predicted (there is no rule). Here are some examples: Past participle Simple past Infinitive been come gone done met was/were came went did met be come go do meet

The uses of the past perfect simple tense:
Use the past perfect tense to show an action that was completed prior to another action that took place in the past. Examples: 1- He had learned Spanish before he went to Spain. 2- President Lincoln had attended the theater before his assassination in 1865. 3- They had had lunch when I arrived.
