2 Britain colonized the east coast of North America (Virginia) in the early 1600s

3 1587: Roanoke Island (North Carolina) was colonized unsuccessfully
Supply ships returned 3 years later to find it abandoned

Investors pooled money and bought shares (hoping for profits)

Colonists planned to find gold, steal from Spanish ships, and develop cash crops
