2. What is Safety?
Safety: the condition of being protected from or unlikely to cause danger, risk, or injury.

3. Why is Safety Important?
To protect ourselves from danger
● To protect others from danger
● To understand the difference between something that is safe and something that is unsafe

4. What F.I.R.S.T. Requires for Safety
Instilling a culture of safety is a value that every individual in the FIRST community must embrace as we pursue the mission and vision of FIRST. FIRST Robotics Competition has adopted safety as a core value and has established the framework for safety leadership in all aspects of the program.

5. Direct from the FIRST Safety Handbook
FIRST, in cooperation with Underwriters Laboratories, updates the safety manual every season. This link takes you to the 2018 manual.
Be familiar with this manual, as well as understand and follow established safety requirements applicable to your work area.
Be familiar with any site restrictions listed in the “Site Info” listed on event entry on the FIRST Robotics Competition Team and Event Search page regarding competition site location(s).
Work in a safe and responsible manner. Always make sure someone else is present with you when operating machines and other equipment.
Use personal protective equipment (PPE), safeguards, and other safety equipment as required.
Identify and report any unsafe or hazardous conditions to the student Safety Captain, Mentor, and/or Safety Advisor. This includes work practices that may cause an accident. Encourage safe behaviors in everyone around you.

6. FIRST Safety Recommendations
● Running and horseplay are never allowed
● Follow safe work practices
● Always walk and work in a controlled manner
● Take special care when working above normal height or ground level

7. Safety in the 4674 Workshop
Background screenings required for volunteers, mentors, and chaperones
One fire extinguisher (Type ABC) per build station; checked annually
A Mentor or Coach must always be present with students in a shop

10. Remind others of these rules!
Robot safety
● Lift robot with legs, not back
● Always lift with a partner
● Watch for sharp edges
● Always wear PPE (safety glasses!) around robot
● Communicate to everyone that the robot is going be enabled
● Never stick your hands in the robot while enabled
Remind others of these rules!

11. Personal protection equipment (PPE)
● Eye Protection
Safety glasses, side shields, goggles, face shields
Use anywhere there is a powered robot, while in the workshop or the pits
● Tie-back long hair
● Avoid loose fitted clothing
● No dangling drawstrings
● Hearing Protection
Earmuffs, earplugs
● Hand protection
Wear gloves when handling chemicals
● Foot protection
Closed toed and closed back shoes

Stay Focused
Don’t get distracted or distract others while the tool is on
Don’t leave unattended while it is on
Complete task as safely and efficiently as possible
Turn off and unplug when finished
Store safely

14. Online safety- social media
Team 4674 – The RoboJacks does not publish students’ last names online/in media
Practice Gracious Professionalism online even while on your personal accounts. You are a representative of RoboJacks
Make sure all s and profile pictures are appropriate and professional

16. Mental health safety
Dealing with a loss or an emotion event during build season
If something is affecting you emotionally during build season, it’s OK to take a day off to be able to address your situation
Talk to a Mentor or Team member
If you are comfortable talking about your situation, talk to a mentor or another peer/member of the team. We are here to help and will listen to whatever you have to say.

17. Safety at competition
Make sure you have your cellphone on you at all times
Bring an external battery charger to events
You must have a buddy wherever you go.
Never give out personal information to anyone you don’t know, even if they seem nice
● If you see a teammate acting in an unsafe manner, it is okay to tell them to stop as it can put them and you in danger

At competitions, only 5 people are allowed in a team pit
You must wear your PPE in the pits

20. How to handle batteries
Don’t plug batteries into each other
Hold batteries with TWO hands
If you do drop a battery, notify a mentor right away even if it does not crack open. DO NOT plug a dropped battery back into a charge

21. Clean up in the shop
Each sub-team must leave their areas clean and tidy after each build session.
A clean work area is a safe work area.
-if areas are left dirty, they will be cleaned before work with commence.
All tools will be put away at the end of each build session.
This is required by Mr. Conway.

22. Clean up pit area at competition
Pit area will be kept clean and organized throughout the competition
Extra care will be given to cleaning and organizing the pit at the end of each day at competition.
This is required by FIRST.
