1 Safety Rules Physical Science

2 The #1 priority of schools must be to return the student home in good health. The best way to insure that is to know and follow the safety rules

3 Rule #1: Always get permission from a teacher before working in the laboratory

4 Rule #2: Tell the teacher at once if an accident occurs
Rule #2: Tell the teacher at once if an accident occurs. Note: even if the accident is minor (spilled water in lab) the teacher should be told. If someone is hurt, the teacher should be told at once.

5 Rule #3: Learn the safety symbols

6 Rule #4: Wear Eye Protection in lab, or when working with power equipment or when an eye hazard may exist. Note: a) eye injuries are serious. b) If anything gets into your eye, DO NOT RUB THE EYE. Flush with water and alert the teacher. c) Avoid use of contact lenses when working with chemicals. They may concentrate the fumes against the eye causing damage.

9 Rule #7: Report to the teacher any student who is violating a safety rule. NOTE: a) that student may need the teacher’s help learning a rule; b) if you don’t report them, how can they ever learn to do things right? c) by not reporting a safety hazard, you are saying you do not care about your own and others’ safety and health.

10 Rule #8: Wear appropriate safety clothing - lab coat, apron, gloves, closed toed shoes, eye protection, hearing protection, etc. NOTE: you must furnish your own closed toe shoes

11 Rule #9: Loose fitting clothes, long hair, necklaces and bracelets may knock over materials, drag in liquids or get caught in machines. Fasten them securely or remove to prevent injury. (To see potential danger of becoming caught in a machine (manikin) Go to video on ) PTO DANGER

15 Rule #13: Never bring an animal to school without teacher approval
Rule #13: Never bring an animal to school without teacher approval. NOTE: a) animals carry germs (pathogens) on their skin/hair/fur. Wash your hands after handling them.

16 Rule #14: After lab work, always wash your hands
Rule #14: After lab work, always wash your hands. NOTE: Never touch your food, drink, cosmetics, your skin, hair or eyes until after you have washed your hands.

17 Rule #15: Never eat any plant part, seed or fruit in a lab or outside unless an adult tells you it is safe to do so. NOTE: a) many plants are poisonous. b) Many plants can injure you due to thorns, spines or irritating oils.

Rule #19: Be careful with electric cords and equipment. NOTE: a) hazards include: shock, burns, and tripping on cords; b) turn off electric equipment before plugging it in or unplugging.

Rule #26: Know the location of emergency & safety equipment. Note: a) fire alarm location; b) fire extinguisher location; c) eye wash stations; d) first aid kit, e) telephone. Note: misuse of safety equipment may be unlawful!
