3 The Stamp Act 1765- Britain passed the Stamp Act
Required all wills, deeds, newspapers and playing cards have a stamp on it Cost money to get the stamp Colonists upset because they did not have representatives in Britain to speak for them No Taxation Without Representation Protests and boycott of British goods caused Britain to repeal (get rid of) the Stamp Act in 1766

5 Townshend Acts 1767 – British tax glass, paper, paints, and tea
- Colonists boycott all goods again British troops sent to keep order

6 Boston Massacre March 5, 1770 Colonists harass a group of British soldiers British soldier fires into crowd and chaos begins 5 colonists killed Newspapers call it a “massacre”… (propaganda technique)

7 Committees of Correspondence
Organized by Sam Adams in 1772 Its purpose was to keep each colony informed of the latest actions of the British crown Their goal was to increase the resistance movement within the colonies

8 Boston Tea Party In 1773, the British pass a tax on all imported tea
Sam Adams and the Sons of Liberty dump $700,000 worth of tea into Boston Harbor! Dressed as Native Americans to hide their identity!

9 The Coercive (Intolerable) Acts
1774: Parliament and King George punish the people of Boston The Royal Navy blocks Boston Harbor… prevents goods from being shipped out Colonists required to house (quarter) British soldiers British General Gage assigned to be Mass. governor

10 The First Continental Congress
1774- delegates from each colony met in Philadelphia and formed the Continental Congress They wanted to send King George a list of grievances (complaints) about Boston King George ignores them

January 1776 – Pamphlet urging colonists to declare independence from Great Britain!

July 4, 1776 – 2nd Continental Congress in Philadelphia Declaration of Independence – Thomas Jefferson Used ideas from John Locke John Hancock first to sign it! George Washington chosen to lead Continental Army

April 1775 British soldiers met a group of armed colonists in Lexington, Massachusetts Colonists trying to stop British from seizing their armory (place you store weapons) Someone fired a shot and men were killed on both sides The American Revolution had begun!
