A person who comes to one country from another to settle. A person who leaves his own country to resides in another.

Economic Troubles Religious and Political Persecution Pull Factors: U.S Economy Easier voyage More affordable, shorter trips more comfortable

Most came from Western Europe (England, Ireland, Germany) More from Southern and Easter Europe (Italy, Greece) Settling on the east coast Also from Asia (China, Japan) Settling on the west coast.

Processed before they could enter the U.S. First, they had to pass a physical examination. Those with serious health problems or diseases were sent home. Next, they were asked a series of questions.

Settled where they could find jobs. Most found work in American factories in major cities, like: New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Chicago Ethnic Neighborhoods When settling, immigrants would look for people with the same kind of villages they knew from their old country. As a result, ethnic neighborhoods were created, such as: Little Italy Chinatown
