1. Introduction to the Module
This module is a second stage introductory language module for students who need an introduction to Spanish. It focuses on all four language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) in an integrated approach. It introduces key structures and vocabulary relevant to topics studied, and provides initial insights into Hispanic society and culture. It combines a communicative approach to language with the development of basic reading and writing skills. The module will develop students’ language competence, which will enhance employability.

4. 2. Intended Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students will be able to:
Knowledge and understanding
Understand high frequency vocabulary and basic grammar and interact orally with someone who speaks Spanish slowly and clear.
2. Read and write simple texts in Spanish
Intellectual, practical, affective and transferable skills
Demonstrate that they have followed a programme of independent activities in support of learning.

5. 3. Attendance Requirements and class participation (10%)
Attending all the classes is very important and one of the best ways to help students succeed in this subject. Students are expected to arrive on time and take an active part during the classes. If they are unable to attend a class for a valid reason (e.g.: illness), they should contact the teacher.
Continued absence can result in the termination of their registration as they will be considered to have withdrawn from their studies.

Once per month, on Wednesdays at 2.00 pm: Cultural activities are the ideal complement to the classroom experience. They are designed to give closer insight into socio-cultural aspects of our language, in a more leisurely way. During the semester, we program the Spanish Film Club, an out-of-class activity, in which students have the opportunity to watch and discuss contemporary Spanish films in order to achieve a global vision of the Spanish society and culture.

All coursework assignments and other forms of assessment must be submitted by the published deadline. It is student’s responsibility to know when work is due to be submitted – ignorance of the deadline date will not be accepted as a reason for late or non-submission.

Range of vocabulary and structures, grammatical accuracy and correct spelling and task completion and quality of information are the main criteria for the assessment paper.
Mid/ term assessment represents 30% of the total mark for the module and the final one represents 40%.
The use of dictionaries/textbooks/notes during the assessment is not allowed.
All questions must be answered in Spanish.
Examination / Assessment scripts are retained by Chiang Mai University and are not returned to students. However, students are entitled to feedback on their performance in an examination and may request a meeting with the teacher to see their examination script and to discuss their performance.

10. 7. Assessment Offences
Students are reminded that any work that they submit must be their own. When they are preparing their work for submission, it is important that they understand the various academic conventions that they are expected to follow in order to make sure that they do not leave theirselves open to accusations of plagiarism (e.g.: the correct use of referencing, citations, footnotes etc.) and that their work maintains its academic integrity.
Plagiarism is theft and constitutes the presentation of another’s work as your own in order to gain an unfair advantage.

11. 8. Spanish II :
Español : Spanish lessons are taught through Power Points which follow the contents, topics and structure of the subject. Provides grammar, vocabulary, and exercises. We will draw heavily on these materials. An interactive video drama and Spanish course. Mi vida loca takes you on an intrigue mystery adventure to Madrid and beyond in 22 episodes of 10 min each, covering basic learning points for Spanish absolute beginners. A learning section complements each episode. Go through the vocabulary and grammar in more detail and at your own pace, then complete activities for practice.

RTVE (Spanish radio and television) is the largest audiovisual group in Spain broadcasting in the Spanish language. In the webpage you can watch series, documentaries or live television 24hours per day. Telecinco is a Spanish commercial television channel operated by Mediaset España. It is a general channel catering for all audiences. It shows popular films, series and sport. Antena 3 is a Spanish terrestrial television channel owned by Antena 3 de Televisión.

El País (The Country) is the highest-circulation daily newspaper in Spain, and one of three Madrid dailies considered to be national newspapers of record for Spain. El Mundo (The World) is the second largest printed and the largest digital daily newspaper in Spain and one of the newspapers of record, with a daily circulation topping 200,000 readers for the printed edition and 24 million unique web visitors per month for the digital one.
