Mass Culture: a common culture experienced by large numbers of people What are some things that could cause this large number of people to experience and create a new culture? Urban populations are growing Industrialization creates cheaper goods We begin top have more time to ourselves

3 Leisure Time Leisure: freedom from time consuming duties
Amusement parks Baseball American and National Leagues Negro League Vaudeville: mix of song, dance, and comedy Ragtime: music that blended African-American songs and European musical forms

4 Consumer Society Consumers: person who buys something
Rise of “modern advertising” Appealed to consumers Ads appeared in newspapers for the 1st time Department Stores began to open Mail order became popular with people in remote areas 1858: Macy’s 1868: Marshall Field 1914: Lord & Taylor Ask class if they recall the store that opened up as a 5&dime and then became a major corporation & department store

5 Literacy Increases! Literacy Increases
Reading became popular (dime novels) Publishing industry grew Joseph Pulitzer: New York World William Randolph Hearst: New York Morning Journal Changes in Schooling New laws would require children to attend school Due to mass immigration Citizenship & English taught

6 Segregation and Jim Crow Laws Still Exist!
Literacy tests and poll taxes were still being used to prevent African Americans from voting Sometimes tests would be written in Latin Plessy v. Ferguson: ruled “separate but equal” was a legal institution & did not violate the 14th Amendment Jim Crow Laws: enforced segregation System was at its height during this period and until the 1960’s From there were over 2500 lynchings

8 Mass Migration Mass migration from the Rural South to already overcrowded cities Made to live in certain areas Landlords often divided out the smallest apartments

9 Booker T. Washington 1881: Founded Tuskegee Institute in AL; taught African Americans a trade Didn’t think African Americans should challenge segregation Thought “whites and blacks could work together” but live separate social lives This belief became known as the Atlanta Compromise
