1 UNIT 1 Matter Day 14 Tuesday, September 19, 2017
Periodic Table Earth and Environmental Science

2 September 19, Science starter- what property did Dmitri Mendeleev use to arrange the first periodic table of the elements?

3 Sept. 19, 2017 Plan for today: 1. Continue periodic table stations
a. Notes b. Shading groups 2. Discuss and begin project “Periodic Table Basics”. 3. Wrap-up

4 Essential Question How does atomic structure affect the physical and chemical properties of elements?

5 (1) Worksheet pp. 87-102 – due Friday
Homework: (1) Worksheet pp – due Friday (2) Quiz on the periodic table Friday. Be studying the properties of the groups and classes (metals, etc.). The workbook pages will reinforce this information.

6 Let’s continue the periodic table stations/shading activity
Let’s continue the periodic table stations/shading activity. Work quickly.

7 You have learned that the alkali metals are the most reactive group on the periodic table. Let’s watch just how reactive they are when they are placed in water, one of the most stable, neutral substances that exists. alkali metals in water

8 Transition Elements (Metals)
All metals Coinage metals; common metals Mostly shiny, ductile, malleable, good conductors, solid (except Mercury) Some are more reactive than others Ex. Iron, copper, gold, nickel, silver

9 Let’s add info. about other groups to our yellow notes.

10 Properties of the Three Major Categories of Elements
Properties of the Three Major Classes of Elements 32. Non-Metals 1.Dull (no luster) 2.Brittle; not malleable or ductile 3.Low melting & boiling points 4.Poor conductors 5.Low density 6.Generally opposite properties to metals 7. Most are gases Carbon

11 Properties of the Three Major Classes of Elements
33. Metalloids 1.Border the stair step (zigzag) on the right side of the Table 2. Called semi-conductors (can sometimes conduct electricity) 3. Silicon is used in electronic devices 4. Properties of both metals & non-metals 5. Can be shiny or dull 6. Some are malleable and ductile; others are brittle 7. Mostly solid

12 Smart lesson – let’s look at information about the p.t.groups.
SMart slide of p.t. groups.notebook

13 Let’s watch a Brainpop video about the Periodic Table.

15 Periodic Table Basics mini-project
Make sure all info is filled in on your element cards (properties, atom models, etc.) Follow the directions to create your mini-version of the periodic table. Make a color key or label the groups on your mini-periodic table. When you and your partner have completed your mini periodic table, do the analysis questions sheet.

16 Wrap-up: Any questions? Work on your workbook homework.
