7th Grade Mathematics Overview Materials Classroom Policies
Students will be introduced to many new concepts during this course. It is essential that they master these, as all future mathematics will build upon them. Examples of these are: Probability, enhanced geometry, expressions, and equations. My name is Mrs. Oliverson. I am very excited to work with students and parents this year. Please, don’t hesitate to reach out to me with any questions or concerns. The best way to contact me is via at I can also reached before or after class in Room 2525 or on my classroom phone Materials I ask that all students come prepared each day with the following items: Pencil, erasers, red pen, math journal (notebook or a 3 ring binder with a divider specific to our class), and a scientific calculator. Classroom Policies All work needs to be shown on both assignments and tests. It is crucial for me, as a teacher, to understand where the student misunderstood the concept so when I reteach it is clear. Late work will be accepted. Students can’t move on unless they clearly understand the material taught before. I will accept all late work for full credit up until the end of the term. If a student fails to turn in something it will go on their grade as Missing. PLEASE don’t wait to turn it in. The more missing work you have the further you will fall behind in class. All work can be redone for better scores. If a student doesn’t like a score they received on an assignment they are welcome to redo the assignment for full credit. I encourage them to come talk to me first, because if I can see they mastered part of it, I will only make them redo the part they were unsuccessful on. Absent students will not be penalized, as it was most likely not their fault. They will be given ample time to turn in missed work and/or tests. However, it is to their benefit to come to tutoring soon after their absence so they can be taught the lesson they learned. (Remember to clear the absence through the main office as per school policy.) Citizenship I expect all students to follow our classroom rules as well as school policies. Failure to do so will result in a drop in citizenship grade. Excessive tardiness and absences will also result in a drop in citizenship grade with potential to earn a “U.” (See school handbook for more details.)

Assessments Grading System Resources
After key standards are taught the entire class will take a short assessment, usually five questions. Students will be given advanced notice of when we will be taking them, or can ask to take them early if they feel proficient. We will generally have an assessment every week. If a student doesn’t like a score they received they will have the opportunity to retake the assessment if the following conditions are met: 1st Retake: You must have all homework turned in relating to that standard. 2nd Retake: You must correct and complete the original assessment. 3rd Retake: You must film a short video teaching a future student how to complete the original assessment. All assignments and assessments will be graded out of 4 points: 4 (Highly Proficient): Student correctly answered all problems and shows mastery of the concept. 3 (Proficient): Student correctly did most problems and showed proficiency of the concept. 2 (Approaching Proficiency): Student showed limited knowledge of the concept. 1- (Below Proficient): Student tried but did not understand the concept. 0- No effort was shown. Grading System Student’s grades will be based on how well they understand a specific concept. Research “Standards Based Grading” for more information. Assignments: (30% of overall grade.) Nightly homework, occasional in-class work, and technology will all count under this category. Assessments: (70% of overall grade.) See above section for more details. Parents please be involved in your student’s academic success. The district app MYDSD is a great resource. You can also check grades online at davis.k12.ut.us. Resources We will be using an online program called Mathia that follows along with our textbooks. Students can access this from home and it is a GREAT tool as it will reteach concepts and give examples problem very similar to what they will see on tests. Tutoring is offered Monday – Thursday after school. Please see the classroom schedules for more details. Everyone is encouraged to attend! Sign below if you have carefully read and reviewed the above disclosure. It is important that everyone is on the same page.
