1 INLAND WATERWAY TRAVEL TIME ATLAS via AIS DATA ANALYSIS
Patricia DiJoseph, PhD Coastal & Hydraulics Laboratory United States Army Engineer Research and Development Center PIANC-SMART Rivers 2017 18-21 September 2017

2 Background Capability Statement – The United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) will have accurate, readily available historic and current waterway travel time statistics. Value Statement – The travel time statistics will enable the USACE to monitor the performance of the waterways, to make informed operations & maintenance decisions, and to provide voyage planning information to stakeholders so that they can optimize their waterway usage. File Name

3 Automatic Identification system (AIS)
AIS is a real-time shipboard broadcast system  Information included in broadcasts: Vessel identification Vessel characteristics Time stamp Location (Lat/Lon) Speed over ground Course over ground Heading Broadcasts are at discrete intervals Carriage requirements are set by federal regulations File Name

4 method Define trip origin, destination, and time period of study
Acquire AIS data Segment the waterway between the origin and destination into links Identify vessel transits and determine their travel times Estimate link travel time statistics Estimate origin – destination statistics Illustration of Ohio River at West Virginia Segmentation File Name

5 Ohio river description
981 miles of navigational waterway 20 navigation locks guaranteed channel depth of 9 feet 5 Top 100 US Ports: Huntington – Tristate, Pittsburgh, PA, Cincinnati OH, Louisville, KY, and Mount Vernon, IN Major commodities: Coal, Crude Materials, Petro & Petro Products Ohio River Tons of Traffic by Year File Name

6 Ohio River AIS Sampling Rate 2014
results Ohio River AIS Sampling Rate 2014 File Name

7 results Estimated vessel trajectories on the Ohio River, River Miles , 2014 File Name

8 results Cumulative annual travel time above the 25th percentile travel time; through links containing locks File Name

9 Next steps Automated, real-time estimations
Travel time estimations accessible to stakeholders via a publically available website Coverage of inland waterway system Quantified effects of travel time variables Travel time predications Origin: Destination: Time Period: File Name
