SPEECH 1ST SEMESTER

2 OVERVIEW Use minimal text – bullets (or sentences if you wish)
Stick to main points Use font/handwriting that is legible Enlarge for CLARITY – EASE of seeing Can add handwritten directions – ‘tell story’, ‘use volume to capture attention’, ‘be sure to smile’

FIND IDEAS EXPERIENCE – a significant event that had strong impact HOBBIES/ACTIVITIES – things you participate in or enjoy doing and why QUALITIES/ABILITIES – things you are most proud of, identifying or associated with you REMEMBER: The point of this speech is to help us all get to know you better!

4 ADAPT YOUR MESSAGE Make assumptions about your audience
What do they have in common? (individual, cultural and sociological characteristics) What might their interests be in listening to your speech? What might be some possible sources of INTERFERENCE? Prepare to handle it…

5 DECIDE HOW TO PRESENT Determine the best way to present your ideas or your message that will be most effective for your audience Encoding/Decoding your content What do you want to say? How do you need to say it, so your audience receives it? Consider verbal/nonverbal cues or signals

6 INTERPRET AUDIENCE FEEDBACK
How will you respond to what your audience does? Audience responses can be POSITIVE or NEGATIVE – they either send you signals that show they are with you, or they send signals that show they are somewhere else Plan your strategies for how you will address

7 DEALING WITH INTERFERENCE
How will you address possible ‘noise’ that may get in the way of your communication (your speech)? REMEMBER: physical noise, psychological noise, semantic noise ONCE you’ve decided on your content, you must consider possible noise that may keep your audience from receiving your message successfully

8 INTRODUCTION/CLOSING
You MUST capture the audience’s attention before speaking so they hear every word You MUST reinforce for them (briefly) what message you’ve sent Can be brief – one or two sentences only Attention getters? Can be: interesting fact, statistic, question, greeting, etc. May also be NONVERBAL…
