1 (A) Axial postgadolinium Tl-weighted image with fat saturation demonstrates a bulky mass in the left tonsillar fossa (white arrowheads), consistent with squamous cell carcinoma. There is mass effect on the left base of tongue, but no gross invasion. (B) Sagittal Tl-weighted image in a different patient with squamous cell carcinoma of the base of tongue demonstrates a large mass lesion (arrowheads) that is deeply infiltrative into the tongue as well as being exophytic into the vallecula (V) and displacing the epiglottis (E) posteriorly. A deep ulceration (U) is present. Note that the oral tongue shows high signal intensity consistent with extensive fatty infiltration. This is related to denervation change secondary to neoplastic invasion of CN XII. Source: Chapter 3.
