1 Uses, Benefits, Best Practices
Proctorio Uses, Benefits, Best Practices By Stacey Smith

2 Why Use Proctorio? 1. As instructors, it is our duty to ensure a level playing field for our students, and preserve the integrity and credibility of our online courses! It may be unrealistic for all students to take proctored exams on campus due to distance, etc. 2. The Proctorio extension is built into our Canvas course shells. You do not need to change any part of your existing exams in Canvas.

3 Why Use Proctorio? (continued)
3. Cheating during online exams is rampant in the form of copy/paste answers, use of Publisher answer keys / instructor manuals, “cheating websites,” etc. 4. Great 24-hour tech support team (chat or phone) 5. Provides instructors the ability to confirm internet or computer issues 6. FERPA compliant and fully accessible

4 What Does Proctorio Do? Proctorio is a remote proctoring extension (currently free for Coastline), mostly used for online exams. There are many available features, of which instructors have the option of customizing: ID verification Video recording / verification Audio recording / verification “Lockdown” features Force full screen Only one screen No new tabs Disable printing Disable right click

5 The Student Perspective
Some hesitation, but not much (from my experience). Students can always elect to take proctored exams on site (DL Center). Depending on how you elect to use Proctorio, the only requirement for students is to install Google Chrome and use a laptop or desktop computer. There is zero cost to students. Proctorio runs right with their web browser; students do not need any special directions from the instructor. Students can contact Proctorio tech support via phone or live-chat 24- hours a day Honest students appreciate instructors using this precaution!

6 How Do You Use the Extension?
Enable the extension on the “Navigation” tab of Canvas Choose your recording options (if any) -Verify ID, record video during exam, etc. Choose your lockdown and verification options -Disable right-click, disable new tabs, disable printing, etc. Choose your behavior settings -You have the ability to tell the system when and how to “flag” exams. -”Recommended settings” will flag exams for excessive head or eye movement, in addition to other suspicions *I am happy to provide a demo or training to anyone interested

7 The Proctorio Gradebook
-The Proctorio gradebook provides a quick overview of “suspicion level” by student. -By clicking on an individual student, you are able to access additional information to make an informed decision about the prevalence of cheating (or internet issues, etc.).

8 The Proctorio Gradebook Continued
Student-specific information available to the instructor includes: Computer performance Web traffic Internet performance Abnormal exam duration Possible collusion The instructor may choose to watch the recorded video of the student or their desktop screen should any issues or suspicions arise (I have been able to verify loss of connectivity this way and issue an exam retake with confidence).

9 Proctorio Best Practices
1. Include the requirement in the syllabus 2. Use Proctorio as part of the Student Learning Contract (SLC) so students know what to expect before taking their first exam (and you can become comfortable with the system) AND to help prevent financial aid fraud 3. Set default Proctorio settings (from there, it only takes one click to save to a new exam) 4. Include Proctorio information / tech support on exam directions 5. Distribute a FAQ document for students (FAQ sample)
