3. Cold War Tensions (Continued)
Truman Doctrine
In 1947, Soviet-backed Communists threatened the governments of Greece and Turkey
Truman announced the Truman Doctrine, which pledged that the United States would provide economic and military aid to oppose the spread of communism.

4. Marshall Plan
Truman and other democratic leaders were concerned that if economic/political conditions in Europe worsened that other countries would turn to communism for help.
U.s. government responded with the Marshall Plan
Plan provided $13.3 billion for rebuilding Europe
Plan helped Europe make a rapid recovery from the war and preserve political stability

5. Containment
The Truman Doctrine and Marshall plan demonstrated the United States policy of CONTAINMENT.
Containment involved resisting Soviet aggression in order to contain the spread of communism.

6. More Tensions
Division of Germany and Berlin was originally supposed to be temporary. However, due to tensions between the USSR and the democratic west, the Western leaders began planning for the creation of an independent democratic German nation and West Berlin
Soviet’s responded by blocking land, rail, and water routes into West Berlin. This left citizens without any food, coal, or other vital supplies.

7. Western Response
Western leaders organized the Berlin Airlift, a massive effort to supply West Berlin by air.
Soviet’s called off the blockade in Berlin after 2 years.

8. Berlin Wall
§After Communist East Germany and democratic West Germany formed, tens of thousands of East Germans left their country by crossing from East Berlin into West Berlin.
§To stop the exodus of people East Berlin began to erect a heavily guarded tall barrier known as the Berlin Wall between the two halves of the city.

10. NATO After the Berlin Airlift, Germany was divided into 2 nations
The Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany)
German Democratic Republic (East Germany)
The United States, Canada, and other Western European countries joined together in a military alliance called the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
The Soviet Union and other communist nations in Eastern Europe formed their own alliance called the Warsaw Pact.

11. Arms Race Begins
§During the 1950s and 1960s, nuclear war seemed to draw ever closer → Soviet Union and the United States raced to develop powerful new weapons.
§In 1949, the United States was deeply concerned about the first successful Soviet test of an atomic bomb and began to experiment with creating even more powerful weapons.
§In the fall of 1952 the United States tested the first hydrogen bomb, but less than one year later the Soviet Union also tested their first hydrogen bomb.

12. Arms Race Begins (continued)
§The United States and the Soviet union began stockpiling nuclear weapons in an attempt to intimidate the opposing power
§The United States had more weapons than the Soviet Union, but it was clear that a nuclear attack by either side would end in horrendous destruction.

13. Space Race
§In 1957, the Soviet Union successfully launched the first satellite Sputnik.
§With the launch of Sputnik the United States feared that the Soviet’s had an advantage over the United States.
§In response, the United States launched the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to return the U.S. to technological greatness.

14. Red Scare
§The growing threat of nuclear war had a significant impact on people in the United States and other nations.
§Many people built bomb shelters that would protect them from a nuclear explosion.
§American schools led air-raid drills to prepare students for a possible nuclear attack.
§The Cold War led to the Red Scare in the United States as many Americans feared possible Communist influence in the U.S. government.

16. Bay of Pigs
§In 1959 rebels under the leadership of Fidel Castro overthrew Cuba’s dictator and installed a Communist government.
§Once in power, Castro formed close ties with the Soviet Union, which worried the United States since Cuba was only 90 miles from the southern most tip of Florida.
§The United States seeking to overthrow Castro secretly led an invasion at Cuba’s Bay of Pigs, called the Bay of Pigs Invasion, but the invaders were quickly defeated.

17. Cuban Missile Crisis
§In 1962, during the Cuban Missile Crisis, the United States and the Soviet Union entered into a confrontation over the installation of Soviet nuclear missiles in Cuba.
§After a two week standoff the Soviet leaders removed the missiles after the United States agreed to remove U.S. missiles from Turkey and not attack Cuba again.
