Ellis Island- New York City
Angel Island- San Francisco Bay
To Enter: Immigrants had to be healthy, show they had money, a skill, or a sponsor to provide for them.
Had to take health tests…if they didn’t pass they could be sent back

7. Ellis Island was built in 1892 as the 1st “Immigration Center”
Later, closed in the 1940s
Today it is a museum.

8. Angel Island
Most Chinese and Asian immigrants came through here (San Francisco Bay)

10. Some Immigrants Assimilate Into Society
Assimilate: to fit in.
Most immigrants lived in ethnic neighborhoods
Americanization: helping newcomers learn American ways. (Language, customs, dress, and diet)
Immigrants usually stuck with their native cultures but children of immigrants were more likely to adopt American ways.
America became known as the “Melting Pot”

Law passed in response to discrimination against the Chinese in 1882
Prohibited immigration by Chinese laborers, limited civil rights of immigrants in America
Chinese were viewed as taking away jobs from Nativists
First law to restrict immigration.
Overturned in 1943

13. Gentlemen’s Agreement 1907– Japan said they would restrict immigration to the U.S. IF the U.S. would treat Japanese immigrants already in America better
