3 Ernest Hemingway

4 Ernest Hemingway Born July 21st 1899 Originally from Chicago
Religious, and very strict family Lived in a shorefront property in Bear Lake At the age of six – moved to the city Father was a doctor. Mother taught all six kids music and creativity. At a very young age he was exposed to concerts, art galleries, and operas. Dad taught the kids how to love nature. By adolescence – seemed well rounded, “afraid of nothing” (his motto) Only interested in English classes during high school.

5 Ernest Hemingway After high school he wanted to join the forces.
His father forbid him to do so. He became a journalist instead. He had to leave home, to take up his job. His job on the Star was to write about everything that happened in the police station, the train station and hospital in his area.

6 Ernest Hemingway His job taught him that good writing was short sentences, vigorous English and positive writing. He learned that professional writers state the facts, not how things would be if they were different. After only six months at the job, he got tired of writing for the paper. He applied to join the forces (in spite of his bad eye).

7 Ernest Hemingway The Red Cross accepted his application for an Ambulance Driver. On May 23rd he set sail towards Italy. He was 18 years old at the time. He traveled throughout Italy, changing from one station to another. Six days before his 19th birthday he was injured in his knee and foot and was hospitalized.

8 Ernest Hemingway He was quite the ladies man.
In one of his hospital stays he fell in love with one of the nurses, Agnes. Eventually he married Elizabeth Hadley and they lived in Paris. She was rich, and they lived off of her trust fund. Hadley gave birth a baby boy, John. He was born in Canada.

9 Ernest Hemingway At this point, Hemingway was tired of reporting news and focused only on his novels. Hadley left him, because she found out about his affair with a Vogue Editor, Pauline. His book, The Sun Also Rises, was dedicated to Hadley and John and all of the royalties went to them as well. Hemingway felt badly about the situation.

10 Ernest Hemingway Hadley would only give Hemingway a divorce if he lived apart from Pauline for six months. With either woman he felt lonely and became suicidal. He eventually divorced Hadley and married Pauline. He returned ill from the honeymoon and couldn’t write for a while. He became depressed because he couldn’t write.

11 Ernest Hemingway Eventually they decided to leave Paris and go live in America. Pauline was pregnant and also wanted to have the baby on American soil. They moved to the Key West. Hemingway soon fell in love with it, and got into the routine of fishing, writing and heavy drinking.

12 Ernest Hemingway His father shot himself in the head, leaving Ernest the one to care for the family. Shortly after, his other son was born. They named him Patrick. Pauline had another baby later on, Gregory. Hemingway still enjoyed fishing and took many trips to Havana, Cuba. Cuba was his first fishing experience where he got a Marlin Fish.

13 Ernest Hemingway He liked to travel a lot and often left Pauline alone with the boys. They ended up getting a divorce. He soon married a woman named Martha, but it didn’t take long before that relationship became strained. He didn’t like the fact that she had a career of her own.

14 Ernest Hemingway He bought a house in Cuba, but he found himself alone most of the time because he wife was off reporting the news. Martha asked him to go to England, and he did. During his stay, however, he fell in love with Mary. He soon left Martha and went with Mary to Paris for a while.

15 Ernest Hemingway He soon went back to Cuba.
He was depressed about his failed marriage to Martha, and began drinking heavily. When his divorced from Martha was finalized, he married Mary. Mary and him went back to Italy to relive the glory days. While he was there, he met Adriana.

16 Ernest Hemingway His relationship with Mary continued.
He later traveled to Mombassa where he had a ritual courtship with a Wakambu girl. During this time he was in two airplane crashes. He returned to Cuba only partially recovered. He saw Adriana for the last time. Although he traveled, Hemingway returned to Cuba and stated his support of the revolutionaries (Castro).

17 Ernest Hemingway He eventually left Cuba.
He already showed signs of mental illness. He ended up in Idaho. He was admitted into the clinic a few times for health reasons. His memory began failing and he found himself, unable to write. He killed himself on July 2nd 1961 by shooting himself.
