Chapter 10 - Lesson 3 Fearing heresy, the Church launches the inquisition. Christendom in the High Middle ages refers to a cultural and political atmosphere in Europe when nearly everyone was Catholic. Pope Innocent III held the Fourth Lateran Council in 1215 in Rome. It was an ecumenical council which meant Church leaders from around the world had to be present.

3 Chapter 10 - Lesson 3 The Fourth Lateran council addressed every aspect of Catholic life: Catholics must receive Communion at least once a year. Transubstantiation describes the changing of the bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ during the consecration, by the power of the Holy Spirit. Church leaders defended the Church against heresy, the teaching of false doctrines of the Church. Pope Gregory IX set up an official court to deal with heretics called the Inquisition.

4 Friars became witness to Christ.
Chapter 10 - Lesson 3 Friars became witness to Christ. As people moved from farms to cities, many problems arose in these urban areas. Friars were a new form of religious life. They were men who came together to live as “brothers.” Friars were not like monks. They were “mendicants,” meaning beggars. Mendicants were religious people who depended entirely on the generosity of others. Friars worked directly with and among the poor. Serfs were peasants who worked the land and were bound to it. They were the lowest positions in society. Vassals held the land, but in exchange they had to give military or other services to the overlords. Overlords were the landowners and the most powerful class.
