5. Agricultural Hearths
Agricultural Hearths originated mostly in Tropical Climates or “A” climates along the equator
Exceptions are in Mesopotamia & East Asia
These are dry climates with rivers
Diffusion of crops was limited by climates

6. Question 1 THIS is the map we’ll use.
Similar to Sauer, but fewer agricultural hearths; they’re either combined or not as detailed as the Fouberg map. This map shows dispersal routes, which are often separated in Sauer’s Map.
You also need to know the crops that are grown in these areas.

7. Question 3: Present Day Agricultural Practices
Present Day Practices are heavily influenced by the climate of the region.
Yes, we can artificially grow things in different climates, but we will talk about that later, and it’s a minority.
Note the map has it divided by commercial and subsistence agriculture; so it takes into account technology
Example: Pastoral Nomadism/Livestock (both involve cattle) take place in dry climates
Cattle “free range” or move around; so they need lots of space to eat the small amount of plants that grow in that climate (due to dry climate); so it’s EXTENSIVE agriculture.

8. Question #4
1) In choosing a map in Getis; it makes a lot of sense if you choose a map of the same scale.
Otherwise; detail is different, which may communicate different things.
2) A majority of other factors, especially economic are going to be influenced by the agriculture of the region
Remember, economic also ties into cultural in how you interact with each other & ESPECIALLY gender.
