There are four mainstream editions of Windows available for sale though three different channels.
Windows 10 Home is the mainstream consumer-focused edition of Windows 10, offering a familiar and personal experience that will be updated with the latest security features on an ongoing basis. Windows 10 Home will come pre-installed on new devices as well as be available through retail channels.
Windows 10 Pro is designed for small and medium businesses and enables organizations to manage their devices and apps, protect their business data, facilitate remote and mobile scenarios as well as take advantage of the cloud technologies for their organizations. Windows 10 Pro devices are a good choice for organizations supporting CYOD programs and “prosumer” customers. Customers with Windows 10 Pro devices will take advantage of the latest security and feature updates on an ongoing basis, while having an ability to install new feature updates after those have been validated in the broad market. Windows 10 Pro will come pre-installed on new devices, be available via retail channels, and is available in volume licensing as an upgrade license.
Windows 10 Enterprise builds on Windows 10 Pro by adding more advanced features designed to address the needs of large and mid-size organizations. Examples include advanced protection against modern security threats, broadest range of options for OS deployment, update and, as well as comprehensive device and app management. Customers with Windows 10 Enterprise devices will be able to take advantage of the latest security and feature updates on an ongoing basis, while having an ability to choose the pace at which they adopt new technology. Windows 10 Enterprise is available exclusively through volume licensing and the CSP channel.
Windows 10 Education is available to staff, administrators, and students through academic volume licensing. Windows 10 Education includes all the features in Windows 10 Enterprise, plus a direct path for multiple devices to upgrade from Windows 10 Home or Windows 10 Pro, without the need to wipe and reload the OS. Windows 10 Education is available exclusively through volume licensing.

Windows 10 Pro upgrades and Enterprise LTSB upgrades will continue to be available without Software Assurance.
We’ll go through these offerings in greater detail but I wanted to provide this as a backdrop for the rest of our discussion.

ACADEMIC OFFERS
Windows 10 Education E3 (formerly Windows 10 Education) offers the benefits of Windows 10 Enterprise to academic institutions. When institutions license faculty and staff at full coverage, we will grant students a free upgrade to Education E3 through the student use benefit, a licensing benefit of our EES/OVS-ES program. We also will continue to offer flexibility for institutions that require a previous version. Education E3 includes Current Branch with programmatic entitlements to Windows 7 Enterprise and Windows 8.1 Enterprise.
Education E3 is the best offering for academic institutions. It includes all of the functionality of Enterprise E3 while allowing in-place upgrades from Windows Home Edition. MDOP is included as a standard component of Education E3 at no additional cost to help Administrators manage their IT environments. MDOP access is not included as part of the student use benefit.
Academic offers have different qualified underlying operating system license rules. The main differences are that Home SKUs and MacOS are qualifying. Full details are included in the product terms.

Historically, customers may have associated Software Assurance with new version rights. Now that Windows is delivered as a service and they automatically get new upgrades, a common question is “why should I renew my Software Assurance?”
Let’s take a look at a side-by-side comparison of what’s included in the 3 different commercial versions of Windows 10 Enterprise.
Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB 2016 provides access to advanced enterprise security and management features, however, it only offers the Long Term Servicing Branch (LTSB) servicing option. This edition does not provide the flexibility of the Enterprise Edition Current Branch or Current Branch for Business servicing options. It also does not provide access to the enhanced controls, use rights, support and training included with Software Assurance.
Windows 10 Enterprise E3 includes all of the advanced security and management features found in enterprise edition, as well as Software Assurance, which provides customers with:
Comprehensive management capabilities and controls
MDOP is a set of products to help with virtualization, management and restore capabilities. MDOP is now only included as an SA benefit, and is no longer a separate add-on.

If Windows 10 SA drops, the customer retains Enterprise features ONLY (LTSB).
They must uninstall Windows Enterprise CBB and reinstall the underlying Pro or Enterprise LTSB version.
If a customer on Windows 10 Enterprise E3 or E5 drops SA, they must uninstall Windows Enterprise E3 and reinstall either the underlying Pro or Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB 2016, retaining only the enterprise features available in LTSB, and losing access to the CBB and CB servicing options, MDOP, and all of the other benefits of SA.

Up until now we have spent a lot of time talking about licensing the primary device with Windows Enterprise E3 and E5. However there is another way to license the primary device using the Windows VDA license.
In most organizations we usually see two types of devices used, PC’s and thin clients. PC’s are typically licensed with Windows 10 Enterprise E3 and E5, as we have talked about. They have a qualified OS on them and need local install rights. Thin clients, on the other hand, have no qualified OS and don’t need local install rights as they are typically used to connect to a VDI infrastructure. For these devices we offer the Windows VDA E3 and E5 licenses.

Traditional per device model:
Traditionally Windows VDA is licensed per device and is available for devices that do not qualify for Windows Enterprise (such as thin clients). This license only offers local install rights of Enterprise Edition, and VDI rights are from a single device.
Per user model:
This license is available as an add-on or a full USL. Windows VDA per user is for customers who do not have users with primary devices running Windows Pro (or a qualified OS). VDA per user does not require the primary device to have a qualified OS.
The Windows VDA per-user license enables customers to:
