When looking for a job you should think of… Skills you have to offer (learned/trained) Abilities you have to contribute (natural) Is job a good fit for who you are? Are you outgoing? Are you shy? Do you simply need the money? Learning Goal: understand & consider other factors before selecting a job

3 Practical Considerations:
Hours/Days you are able to work Schedule School Work Other Family Members Transportation Are you driving yet? Can someone drive you? Will you have to pay for gasoline? Learning Goal: understand & consider other factors before selecting a job

4 Professional Considerations:
Is this job a good fit for who you are? Is this job going to contribute to who you might want to be? Can you make a commitment? You should do your absolute best to NOT be a job hopper. It looks bad to other employers if you cannot or choose not to hang on to your position. Learning Goal: understand & consider other factors before selecting a job

Which one of the personal, practical, or professional considerations do you think is most important to you?

6 Preparing for the Job Hunt
Get a list of places to apply Be well groomed and well dressed Bring a pen Have a list of references/contacts in case they give you an application to fill out Prepare for “no” What’s the worst they could say to you… What would you say back? Parents Relatives Neighbors you KNOW Newspaper/Online Help Wanted Section Walk around town / mall looking for signs in windows Friends who have jobs Online Specific Websites (i.e. Not every place that is hiring advertises, so if you are interested in working somewhere, don’t be afraid to ask to speak to a manager or supervisor Learning Goal: understand & consider other factors before selecting a job

Part-time: usually less than 30 hours a week Full-time: usually 40 hours per week Pay type: Hourly: you get paid a set amount per hour Salary: you get paid a set amount no matter how much you work Benefits/Drawbacks of each? Wage: The amount of money you receive per hour Competitive: a wage that is comparable to similar jobs in other locations.

Job Description: What exactly you will be doing while on the job (e.g. sweeping the floors, reshelving returned items, greeting customers, etc.) Job Requirements/Skills: What you should be able to do in order to perform the job effectively (e.g. lift 30 lbs, stand for long periods of time, have good customer service skills, etc.) Benefits: What you receive as a perk/addition to your pay (e.g. medical/dental benefits, free food after working a certain number of hours, discounts on merchandise, etc.)
