2 How phonics is taught at John Rankin
Letters and Sounds Consistent approach to phonics in FS and then KS1 Daily sessions – 20 minutes - 5 times a week Teaching Sequence - Revisit/Review, Teach, Practise, Apply Emphasis on interactive games and oral work

3 Terminology Phoneme - sounds we make when we say that letter.
Grapheme - ‘shape’ that represents a phoneme eg. s, ai, th, igh Blend - put letters together to make a word eg. c-a-t cat Segment - separate a word into phonemes eg. cat c-a-t Alliteration - the repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of words VC / CVC - vowel-consonant ‘in’ consonant–vowel-consonant ‘pin’

5 Exploring Letters and their sounds
Phase 2 Exploring Letters and their sounds 19 letters are taught + combination letters (ck, ff, ll) Blend letters and segment words Read ‘vc’ and ‘cvc’ words High frequency words – ‘the, to, go, no, into’

6 Phase 2 Pronunciation... not ‘uh’ at the end soft voice (p, s, m) Blend and segment... manipulate letters read words

16 Exploring Alternative Pronunciations
Phase 5 Exploring Alternative Pronunciations 19 new graphemes are taught. Children will already have learnt ai (rain), but will learn alternative spellings e.g. ay (play) and a_e (snake) Alternative pronunciations of graphemes will also be introduced e.g. ea in tea, head and break.
