The Circulatory System
2
Major Parts of the Circulatory System
Heart Muscle that pumps blood
3
Major Parts of the Circulatory System
Arteries Thick blood vessels that carry blood AWAY from the heart Veins Blood vessels that carry blood TOWARD the heart Capillaries Very thin blood vessels Where gases are exchanged
4
Comparing Different Blood Vessels
The colour RED is used to show blood with oxygen ()((a small artery) The colour BLUE is used to show without oxygen (has more carbon dioxide) ()((a small vein)
5
Components of Blood Red blood cells carry oxygen and nutrients to the cells Red blood cells also carry carbon dioxide and other wastes away from the cells Made by bone marrow. Contain immature cells which are then released into the blood stream.
6
White Blood Cells White blood cells also called leukocytes fight pathogens like bacteria and viruses White blood cells engulf “eat” the pathogens and break them apart Made in the spleen.
7
Flow of blood through the Body
HEART Blood cells pick up Carbon Dioxide from body cells Heart pumps blood with CO2 to the lungs LUNGS Carbon dioxide is dropped off and oxygen is picked up (gas exchange) BODY HEART Body cells use the oxygen for their functions Heart pumps oxygenated blood to the body
8
4 Chambers of the Heart The heart has two sides:
Right side has oxygen-poor blood Left side has oxygen-rich blood
