Why Use a Formative Assessment
PASeries was developed to fill that “middle ground.” Easy to administer in the classroom Scientifically based so results have meaning and reliability PASeries is the first formative assessment designed to scientifically forecast growth. Connects classroom instruction to results Forecasts how students will perform at the time of your high stakes test Why use a formative assessment? There is a lot of focus on the end of the year summative assessments. PASeries is a formative assessment product that was developed to give teachers a scientifically reliable way to measure how students are progressing towards the end of the year test before they take the test. PASeries was designed to be easy to administer in the classroom and to give educators immediate feedback on their students’ performance.

PASeries Reading provides…
Tests for Grades 3-8 Screener test for placement for each grade Three progress assessments for each grade to measure growth through the year Three level tests within each progress assessment to target student ability Above level tests, On level tests, Below level tests 10 tests per grade for a total of 60 tests (including screeners) Results reported using the Lexile scale Reading details Teachers administer a grade level screener test at the beginning of the year. The screener test will give the teacher an indication of his or her student’s initial reading ability. Teachers can then administer on level tests to their entire class or they can target specific students with above level or below level assessments. Teachers can also use off grade level tests for students that are significantly above or below the reading grade level. Reading Screeners are designed to be age appropriate for the grade level administered. PASeries uses colors to represent grade levels and the letter Q, R and S to represent Above, On and Below level tests to protect students’ privacy. We will show an example of a schedule later in the presentation.

PASeries Reading Tests
Measures comprehension and vocabulary Multiple-choice item format 36 items per test Designed to be delivered in one class period (40-50 min) Screener given at beginning of year (recommended) Progress assessments given every 9 weeks (recommended) Assess as often as needed More on the PASeries Reading tests It is recommend that teachers administer the screener test at the beginning of the year followed by a progress assessment approximately every nine weeks. Each student would take 4 reading tests. This is a recommended schedule. Test administrators have access to the full battery of 60 tests for each student. They can choose to administer more or fewer tests depending on their needs and curriculum schedule. If you would like to administer an alternative schedule and are unsure what tests to take, you can always call your PASeries Customer Support Team for extra assistance.

PASeries Reading Scale
PASeries Reading measures progress using the scientific Lexile scale Ties scores to other assessment instruments and instructional materials Matches reader ability and text difficulty, allowing individualized monitoring of progress Forecasts student performance at the time of your high stakes test after taking at least 2 tests Are the most widely adopted reading measures in use today To find out more about The Lexile Framework for Reading, visit PASeries Reading progress tests use the Lexile Framework to measure student progress. PASeries Reading reports on the Lexile scale. Lexiles are the most widely adopted reading measures in use today. Tens of thousands of books and tens of millions of newspaper and magazine articles have Lexile measures — more than 450 publishers attach Lexile measures to their titles. In addition, all major standardized reading tests and many popular instructional reading programs can report student reading scores in Lexiles. The student must take at least two progress tests to receive a forecast measure. A screener test is considered a progress test. Lexiles are further explained in several sources on the Pearson PASeries page at:

PASeries Mathematics provides…
Tests for Grades 3-8 Screening test for placement Six progress tests for each grade level to measure growth In-depth diagnostic testing by strand for targeting instruction 15 to 16 tests per grade for a total of 93 tests (including screeners, progress and diagnostic tests) Results reported using the Quantile scale Mathematics details Teachers administer a grade-level screener test at the beginning of the year. The Mathematics screeners are designed to test the students’ grasp of content from the end of the previous school year. The teacher will then administer the Mathematics Progress tests. The PASeries Mathematics progress tests should be given in numerical order to best evaluate student progress through a school year. Each test covers some content of each of the NCTM strands. Students may find some material more difficult simply because that content has not yet been studied. To guide instructional support decisions, the teacher can administer one or more diagnostic assessments supporting the strands of concern. The diagnostic assessments are designed to further identify students’ strengths and weaknesses within a content strand and to help teachers determine more specifically the types of errors students are demonstrating within the strand. The Mathematics Diagnostic Test – Teachers Guide provides direction on how to select the appropriate mathematics diagnostic test. We will show an example of a schedule later in the presentation.
15
PASeries Mathematics Progress Tests
Measures the NCTM strands: numbers and operations, geometry, algebra (patterns and functions), data analysis and probability, and measurement Multiple-choice item format 30 items per test Tests increase in difficulty Designed to be delivered in one class period (40-50 min) Screener given at beginning of year (recommended) Progress assessments given every 6 weeks (recommended) Assess as often as needed More on the Math Progress tests We recommend that teachers administer the screener test at the beginning of the year followed by a progress assessment approximately every six weeks. Each student would take 7 math tests. This is a recommended schedule. Test administrators have access to the full battery of 42 progress tests (1 screener and 6 progress tests per grade) for each student. They can choose to administer more or fewer tests depending on their needs and curriculum schedule. If you would like to administer an alternative schedule and are unsure what tests to take, you can always call your PASeries Customer Support Team for extra assistance.
16
PASeries Mathematics measures progress with the Quantile scale
In addition to industry-standard Lexile reading measures, PASeries is the first assessment to use Quantile math measures A scientific approach to measure students’ math achievement Forecasts student performance at the time of your high stakes test after taking at least 2 tests Ties scores to other assessment instruments and instructional materials To learn more about the Quantile Framework for Mathematics, visit PASeries Mathematics Progress tests use the Quantile Framework to measure student progress. Like the Lexile scale for reading measurement, the Quantile scale is numeric. Scores are followed by the letter “Q” (e.g., “950Q”). The scale typically ranges from below 200Q to above 1700Q, although actual Quantile measures can range from 0Q to above 2000Q. The Quantile scale represents mathematic achievement ranging from understanding how to read mathematical expressions to knowing how and why to apply various types of mathematical knowledge in areas such as numbers and operations, geometry, algebra, data analysis and probability, and measurement. The student must take at least two progress tests to receive a forecast measure. A screener test is considered a progress test. Quantiles are further explained in several sources on the Pearson PASeries page at:

PASeries Mathematics Diagnostic Tests
30 items per form Generally 3-4 reporting categories on each test 8 or 9 tests per grade The teacher guide provides details on performance expectations covered on each test Provides more detail on student strengths and weaknesses Raw score reporting only Delivered in one class period (40-50 min) Assess as often as needed More about using a Math Diagnostic Tests Math diagnostic tests are designed to be used at the teacher’s discretion. The progress tests have questions from each of the five NCTM strands to give a general indication of student’s ability. If a student misses more than 50% of a strand after the content has been covered in class, a teacher may want to consider using one of the diagnostic tests to hone in on the student’s area of difficulty. Use the Math Diagnostic Teachers Guide to review the performance expectations for each diagnostic test. The diagnostic tests are not used to measure student’s growth. The diagnostic tests will provide the teacher with the student’s correct and incorrect responses at the test and score group level so they can diagnose student’s strengths and weaknesses.

Click request or get file
Lastly, LET’S VIEW THE DISTRICT FORECAST PERFORMANCE REPORT by SUBGROUP Click request or get file Subgroup Reports Subgroup reports display results for selected test series and grade levels at the school, district, and state level. Subgroup categories include gender, race/ethnicity, migrant status, Title 1 status, limited English proficiency status, and special education status. For example, the School Forecast Performance by Subgroup Report displays the school summary of the forecasted percentage of students at each performance level for the selected test series, grade level, and subgroup, based on the most recently taken progress tests. If less than 10 students at a school or district level or less than 30 students at a state level have tested, then an Insufficient Data message will be displayed for that category. This measure is taken to protect the privacy and identity of each student. These reports must be requested and are presented in PDF format within 24 hours. The Reports are similar to the performance summaries but the results are broken out into demographic subgroup. If a subgroup has a message of Insufficient Data, no results will be reported due to privacy guidelines for students.
