Registering on Naviance
All students at BHS are registered on Naviance We have added parent s to Naviance so you should be getting s we send home about various topics. If you are not getting s please your counselor so we can make sure we have the correct for you. You can log into your students accounts to have access to all the college and career information.

Registering on Naviance Continued
Once a student is registered they MUST complete the three different career assessments Do What You Are Career Interest Profiler Cluster Finder Once students have completed all three tests, they can start clicking on different careers and researching them This process will also lead them to various colleges that best match them based on their career preferences

Naviance and College Colleges I’m thinking about (9th, 10th, and 11th graders) This section keeps track of colleges you are interested in and can stay in there until you have applied to the school Colleges I’m applying to (Seniors Only after you have submitted your application) Letters of Recommendation Students must ask teachers in person AND request them through Naviance Resumes can be helpful to teachers and counselors for recommendation writing

Take the right classes English - 4.5 credits Math – 4 credits
Science – 3 credits (recommended 4 for college) Social Studies – 4 credits Foreign Language – none required, however 2-3 credits may look good for some colleges Fine Art – 1 credit PE credits Health - .5 credits Total Credits - 28

Create an Academic Portfolio/Resume
Academic records Test scores Honors Certificates Awards Activities – sports, clubs, volunteer work, community service, and jobs Writing/Art samples Projects

Suggestions for researching colleges
Attend local college fairs Baldwin Wallace-October 3rd, 2016 LCCC College Fair-October 6th, 2016 Cleveland National College Fair at the Huntington Convention Center-April 1st, 2017 Visit colleges/Take a tour of the campus Getting on the campus is extremely important Sign up to visit colleges right on the colleges website Meet with college representatives at BHS Take this opportunity to let the college reps get know you and what you can bring to their campus Use Naviance

What colleges look for in their applicants…
GPA Course rigor (AP, honors, etc) Class Rank (weighted and unweighted) ACT & SAT scores Extracurricular Activities In school – clubs and sports Out of school – community service, volunteer, jobs Letters of Recommendation College Essays College Interviews

Applying to College Apply online through the College website or the Common Application (always use Common Application if it is an option) www. commonapp.org Update Naviance that you have applied Tell Fran Magas in Guidance that you have applied. We will have no way of knowing that your student has applied to college unless you tell Mrs. Magas Please give the guidance office 10 business days in advance to avoid missing deadlines

Applying to College Continued
Ask your teachers for letters of recommendation in person and through Naviance (under “colleges I’m applying to”-Letters of Recommendation) This is something students can start doing their junior year Make sure that you have your ACT & SAT scores sent to all of the colleges you are applying to. We do not send test scores Juniors taking ACT and SAT tests at this time should have their scores sent to colleges

Complete career assessments on Naviance Research potential college interests Get involved in school and out of school activities Visit colleges if you have the opportunity Build relationships with teachers and counselors Take the PSAT Test at school to prepare for SAT You can also purchase ACT and SAT review books and start studying early

Visit colleges Take the PSAT at school Take the ACT and SAT – 2 times each between January and June Make sure when you sign up for the ACT and SAT you are having your test scores sent to colleges Career Shadow – See Mrs. Dodd to set up shadowing Update Naviance accounts Research colleges Attend college rep visits at BHS

College Timeline 12th Grade
Attend college rep visits (announcements and Naviance) Fill out admission applications online Update Naviance Accounts Create a Common Applications Account if you are applying to schools on the common application-can start this after August 1st Send your ACT & SAT scores from test sites to your colleges Be aware of college deadlines Apply for scholarships (they are posted on Naviance) Local Scholarships will be posted on the district website Complete the FAFSA-October 1st 2016

ACT, SAT & PSAT ACT – www.actstudent.org SAT – www.collegeboard.com
All Juniors will be taking the ACT at BHS on March 21st This score will be on the students record and can be sent to colleges SAT – PSAT – Share your results with Kahn Academy for personalized SAT practice. Tutors, review classes, college prep class for juniors, practice books and both websites will help you study and prepare for the ACT & SAT

Financial Aid Complete the FAFSA after October 1st of your senior year
Set up a personal appointment with Valerie Howard with College Now to discuss Financial Aid, Grants and Scholarships. Call (Guidance office) to set up an appointment with our College Now representative. Attend BHS Financial Aid night in the Fall Joy Heldt-PTA has raised $11,000 for scholarships Money is there and available if you are a member of PTA and apply for the scholarship $6 for students and $10 for adults to join PTA
