Understand and Identify DO, IO, PA, and PN in a sentence. Analyze how authors effectively use argument to prove a claim. Homework: Study DOIOPNPA Quiz Wednesday

4 Warm up- Write down a description of your favorite commercial. Is it effective at selling its message? How so? Trunk Monkey What was it claiming? What did it use to prove the claim?

5 Close Reading Week 5 Get into your 4 person groups and go through each question from week 5. You have to discuss your rationale with your group. Come up with a group answer for each question and write it on your rationale sheet.

Get your laptop and pull up the grammar worksheet for today. Answer the questions. You may ask your partner but you can’t ask me any questions for the first 10 min.

11 The Argument A series of statements used to persuade someone to accept the position of the writer. An argument consists of: a claim and support Claim-> Your stance on an issue. Support-> Your valid reasons that are used to prove your claim and the evidence used to support your reasons. Appeals can be used to support a claim. Claim-> Guns should be heavily regulated Support-> Reasons: Evidence: Guns are dangerous A. Firearm crimes were at 467, victimizations in 2011 Guns are only meant to kill B. Firearm violence accounted for 70% of all homicides

14 Argument Breakdown: Claim: Free trade encourages individuals to cultivate moral virtues. Reason 1: producers must serve their fellow human beings by providing goods and services others want and need Reason 2: the most economically successful will be those who provide not just for a select few but for a broad segment of consumers Evidence 1: Pope John Paul II observed that people in free markets were diligent and faithful. Evidence 2: A supplier who misses deadlines for shipment or a buyer whose credit is no good will soon lose business to their competitors with better reputations.

15 I Have A Dream- page 660 Read MLK’s speech and complete a google doc which includes your annotations for argumentation and parallelism. Write two examples of pathos, ethos, and logos at the bottom. When you are finished work within your academic groups to discuss the appeals which were used. You have 15 minutes to complete this portion of the assignment.
