1 Day 35 – I have a dream, Nonfiction Review, Adjectives and Adverbs

2 Objectives: Analyze and evaluate answers to the nonfiction common assessment. Understand and identify the role adjectives and adverbs play in a sentence. Homework: Check your grades. If you need tutoring, you need me. Check absences. You can’t miss more than 10 in any class.

4 Warm up- Write down a description of your favorite commercial. Is it effective at selling its message? How so? What was it claiming? Which persuasive appeal did it use to prove the claim?

5 I Have A Dream- page 660 Read MLK’s speech and complete a google doc which includes your annotations for argumentation and parallelism. When you are finished work within your academic groups to discuss the appeals which were used. You have 15 minutes to complete this portion of the assignment.

9 Adjectives

10 Adjectives An adjective describes a noun or a pronoun. Example:
An adjective answers: What kind? Which one? How many? Example: happy dog tired boy seven girls

11 To find an adjective you need to locate the nouns first.
Three happy children played at the park. The donkey stepped on my large hat. The child was brave.

12 Articles are the adjectives a, an, and the
Articles are the adjectives a, an, and the. A and an are indefinite articles. The is the definite article. Possessive pronouns, such as my and our, can be considered adjectives because they modify nouns. Similarly, possessive forms of nouns, such as Roger’s and the captain’s, can also be considered adjectives. A proper adjective is formed from a proper noun and begins with a capital letter. Cervantes was a Spanish writer. The Korean restaurant is very popular.

First find the nouns… The brown dog growled at the tall man. Then ask, “What words describe the nouns?” WHAT KIND? WHICH ONE? HOW MANY?

19 AN ADVERB: Modifies an active verb or a verb phrase by expressing manner, place, time, degree, or number.

20 TYPES OF ADVERBS: Simple Interrogative Negative

21 EXAMPLES: SIMPLE: She moved quietly. (Manner and tell how)
I waited there for an hour. (Place and tell where) You may leave soon. (Time, tells when) I called you once. (Number, tells how many) He sat very still. (Degree, tells how much)

22 Interrogative Adverb Introduces a sentence that asks a question
where, when, why and how

23 EXAMPLES: Interrogative: When will you return?
How is the trunk being sent?

24 Negative Adverb Denies or contradicts a statement
no, not , never, only, scarcely and hardly Note: two negative adverbs should not be used together.

25 EXAMPLES: Negative - I can scarcely believe my eyes. ( correct)
- I haven’t no more sea shells. (incorrect)

The designers changed the basic design of the popular model. 6. A good hiking boot needs a sturdy sole. 7. We watched the little silvery fish jump completely out of the water.

29 Adjectives Activity Take out a piece of paper and remove everything else from your desk. You will have 30 seconds to write down as many adjectives to describe the picture on the following slide. When the alarm rings, put down your pen/pencil. No words will be counted after the 30 seconds have past. When you are ready, put your head down on the desk. I will tell you to look at the screen.

31 Pair Exercise Using your new found skill for identifying adjectives, download the document from Google classroom and complete it with your partner. Once finished, compare your answers with a pair next to you.

32 Nonfiction Review Log onto classroom.
Click the Nonfiction test and you will be able to see your answers. DO NOT TRY TO CHANGE THEM. Get into your 4 person groups and compare your answers. Just like the close reading, find a group response. DO NOT WRITE ON THE TESTS
