2. The Four Characteristics of Poetry
There is many many different characteristics of poetry but here are a few.
Rhyme
Rhythm
Figurative Language
Shape

3. 1. Rhyme
A rhyme is a repetition of similar sounds (or the same sound) in two or more words, most often in the final syllables of lines in poems and songs.
Some poems use rhyming words to create a certain effect. Not all poems are rhyming. Poetry that does not rhyme is called "free verse poetry.“

4. 2. Rhythm
The rhythm is the characteristic of a periodic phenomenon induced by the perception of a structure in repetition. The pace is not the signal itself, nor its repetition, but the notion of form or "movement" that produces the repetition of perception and understanding. We recognize the same rhythm in phenomena rates, or frequencies, different when the order of succession and the length ratio between its moments of tension and release is identical. These moments are often described as moments of elevation and lowering.
The word rhythm is frequently used in everyday language outside its precise meaning, technical, fairly well defined in music and poetry , as metonymy for any sort of rhythmic events. In philosophy , it is often a metaphor for dealing coordinated actions or regular transactions.

5. 3. Figurative Language
Figurative language is language that uses words or expressions with a meaning that is different from the literal interpretation. When a writer uses literal language, he or she is simply stating the facts as they are.
Figurative language, in comparison, uses exaggerations or alterations to make a particular linguistic point.

6. 4. Shape
A Shape Poem is a type of poetry that describes an object and is shaped the same as the object the poem is describing. You could write your shape poem on anything. What Shapes Could You Make Your Poetry? You could have a circle-shaped poem describing a cookie, or a poem about love shaped like a heart

There are so many types of poems and each one different then the last.
Here are a few of the main ones and my favorites!

8. Lyric
Lyric poetry is a formal type of poetry which expresses personal emotions or feelings, typically spoken in the first person.
The term derives from a form of Ancient Greek literature, the lyric, which was defined by its musical accompaniment, usually on a stringed instrument known as a lyre.
The term owes its importance in literary theory to the division developed by Aristotle between three broad categories of poetry: lyrical, dramatic and epic.

9. Ballad
A ballad is a form of verse, often a narrative set to music. Ballads derive from the medieval French chanson balladée or ballade, which were originally "dancing songs“.
Ballads were particularly characteristic of the popular poetry and song of the British Isles from the later medieval period until the 19th century and used extensively across Europe and later the Americas, Australia and North Africa

10. Sonnet
A sonnet is a poetic form which originated in Italy; Giacomo Da Lentini is credited with its invention.
The term sonnet is derived from the Italian word sonetto. By the thirteenth century it signified a poem of fourteen lines that follows a strict rhyme scheme and specific structure. Conventions associated with the sonnet have evolved over its history. Writers of sonnets are sometimes called "sonneteers", although the term can be used derisively.

11. Haiku
Haiku is one of the most important form of traditional Japanese poetry. Haiku is, today, a 17-syllable verse form consisting of three metrical units of 5, 7, and 5 syllables. Since early days, there has been confusion between the three related terms Haiku, Hokku and Haikai.
The term hokku literally means "starting verse", and was the first starting link of a much longer chain of verses known as haika. Because the hokku set the tone for the rest of the poetic chain, it enjoyed a privileged position in haikai poetry, and it was not uncommon for a poet to compose a hokku by itself without following up with the rest of the chain.

12. Rhyme Scheme
A rhyme scheme is the pattern of rhymes at the end of each line of a poem or song. It is usually referred to by using letters to indicate which lines rhyme; lines designated with the same letter all rhyme with each other.

13. How to write great poetry
Writing a poem is all about observing the world within or around you. A poem can be about anything, from love to the rusty gate at the old farm. Writing poetry can help you become more eloquent and improve your linguistic style. However, it's hard to know where you should start. Although poetry writing is definitely a skill that improves with practice (just like any other type of writing).
Here is a example of a limerick
A woman who once heard a mouse
ran screaming all throughout her house.
She sent in the cat
to dispose of the rat
to find it was only her spouse

And sings the tune without words-

Yet- never- in Extremity,
It asked a crumb- of me

15. Where did poetry come from
The earliest poetry is believed to have been sung, employed as a way of ………compression, intensity of feeling, the use of refrains- appear to have come about from……Others suggest that poetry did not necessarily predate writing So poetry is not really from anywhere, but from songs.
