2 Kansas-Nebraska Act Stephen Douglas wanted to build a transcontinental Railroad the railroad would not benefit the South So, have Kansas and Nebraska decide Popular Sovereignty What does this repeal?

3 Bleeding Kansas Pro- and Anti-slavery groups move to Kansas to create a majority Missourians would vote pro- slavery and then return to Missouri Violence erupts and creates a warlike environment Kansas eventually became a Free State in 1859

4 John Brown In retaliation of slave forces John Brown makes several attacks in Kansas Finally decides to start a slave war by arming slaves Attempted to raid Harpers Ferry, Virginia He was captured and Hanged for treason However, is he a hero or villain?

South Carolina seceded before Lincoln takes office 1st Inaugural address - preserve the Union and not end slavery “Free Soil” - stop spread of slavery not end it Lincoln viewed states that seceded as rebelling, it was his job to put down the insurrection

habeas corpus - someone being held must be charged with a crime, not just held Lincoln suspends this for Confederate sympathizers, over 13,000 The President can do this in times of emergency
