3 Aims of the Training Area
Meet the needs to Industry Provide work ready graduates for Viticulture and Wine sectors Attract new students into the region (career change) Assist those in industry to upskill – without having to leave jobs Attract school leavers Assist all our students into a career pathway

4 Challenges for Education
Need to provide aims within existing funding constraints Changes to qualifications post a review of Hort sector. e.g. qualifications under degree level can not be Vit &Wine. Under separate ITO’s No quals owned by a region below degree level. = Not possible to have a V&W Diploma

5 Challenges for Education
The Marl area has extremely low unemployment – people do need to come in from outside region Small numbers of school leavers stay in Marlborough. Many already have jobs before they leave. Need to attract people to area and sector

6 Needs of the Industry Training below degree level (Level 2-4)
Vineyard workers, operators, supervisors, Entry level cellar hands, experienced cellar hands Training at Degree level (Level 5-7) Providing education directly related to the industry Scientific, up-to-date and practical Providing the next generation of leadership Help Industry to meet Immigration NZ criteria Providing NZers with opportunity to training and work

7 Progress … Cellar Operations Level 3 Cost - $595
60 credits = 600 hours (tutor, self-directed and workplace practical) New programme starting in January 22nd 2018 Intensive 6 weeks prior to vintage Intro to basic science, main cellar tasks, team work 7 week vintage – practical sign off Complete final ‘wine finishing’ course part time Complete by July 2018 Cost - $595

9 Level 4 Applied Viticulture AKA …
Level 4 Applied Viticulture AKA ….NZ Cert L4 Horticulture – Fruit Production New programme commenced Sept 2017 90 credits = 900 hours Part time 4 hours week For vineyard workers - leading hands, existing and potential supervisors. Includes HR, effective communication, conflict resolution 6 courses- Content follows appropriate season 13 months – breaks for harvest, Xmas and flowering Intakes June and Sept

10 Bachelor of Viticulture & Winemaking – Integrated 3 year programme
Pest & Disease Management Winemaking Microbiology Engineering Marketing Wine Assessment Sustainable practices Plant Science Soil Science Work-ready graduates Theory integrated with practical Work placements and a research project Flexibility: on campus, blended, online

11 Degree - Three years Initial small group will graduate next month
Flexibility for students to suit their needs Study on campus Blended campus/online Fully online (for those in industry employment) with Res schools Currently 75 students are on campus 35 are working in Industry – completing online and with residential schools for lab work 15 International students

12 Partnerships - Chinese NMIT interaction
In the V&W area current interactions: Beijing University of Agriculture 5 current students. 2 will graduate in 2017 Chinese Agricultural University 2 students will graduate 2018 Ningxia Wine School – 2+2 arrangement 5 students started in July 2017

13 Partnerships – Trust Organisation – aims to grow the next generation of Māori leaders for the land based industries through education Have an MOU to partnership with NMIT Aim- provide recruitment, cultural support and post course employment for Maori students A focus on getting young Maori into employment in land based industries.

14 2017 – 13 students in Horticulture in Canterbury
2018 – expansion to 120 students being recruited for Horticulture, Aquaculture, Viticulture, Cellar Ops, Tourism, Carpentry,  and Conservation. Cultural, academic and financial support Students have an initial Noho Marae, ongoing 1-to-1 mentoring.

15 Blue Sky- Programmes like Network ANZ
Bringing in 75 students from Chile and Argentina to Central Otago Practical viticulture work coupled with English and Hort study Took 2 years to sort immigration Challenges…Accommodation, visas But potential???

16 NZ School of Winegrowing
Starting in 2018 Opening was in Sept… Any details from floor.
