1 The unrecognized epidemic IN INDIA
copd The unrecognized epidemic IN INDIA By: Caroline & Jithin

2 What is copd Chronic inflammatory disease causing obstructed airflow from the lungs Increased risk of developing heart disease, lung cancer etc. Emphysema & chronic bronchitis are the 2 most common conditions contributing to copd

3 CAUSES Developed countries – tobacco smoke
Developing countries – long term exposure to lung irritants e.g. air pollution, chemical fumes, dust

4 emphysema Fragile walls and elastic fibres of alveoli are destroyed
Small airways collapse during exhalation Reduces surface area of lungs Shortness of breath Pale lips and fingernails on exertion

5 Chronic bronchitis Bronchial tubes are inflamed and narrowed
Lungs produce more mucus  blocks bronchial tubes Chronic cough, mucus production, shortness of breath, wheezing

6 complications Respiratory infections – more likely to catch colds, the flu and pneumonia Increased risk of heart disease and lung cancer Pulmonary hypertension

7 Diagnosis Pulmonary function tests – spirometry Chest x-ray
Arterial blood-gas analysis

8 Why is it a problem in india?
people using non conventional form of tobacco in hookah, bidi, or chillum Exposure to biomass fuels like crop residues or woods or animal dung. 90% of rural households and 32% of urban households cook their meals on a biomass stove. Mosquito coils

9 problems in the diagnosis, management and follow-up of Indian COPD patients.
Lack of awareness of the disease, its symptoms or implications prevent people at risk from seeking help from their physicians or eliminating risk factors. High levels of underdiagnosis In rural areas, terminally ill copd patients are prescribed inhalation devices

11 statistics 65 million people have moderate to severe COPD and 3 million people died of COPD in 2005 (who), 5% of all deaths globally and it is estimated to be the third leading cause of death by 2030. In India: 11% of deaths annually making COPD the 2nd largest leading cause of death. estimates suggest there are 30 million COPD patients in India.
