Calvert– Lord Baltimore wanted safe place for Catholics to settle
Planted tobacco but also required settlers to plant corn
Port city of Baltimore is founded, many rich people
Act of Toleration– passed to allow freedom of religion

4. Carolina “Charles Land”– land given to rich settlers
Starts as one colony, Charlestown is main city
Tobacco, cotton, rice, indigo big products
North– no good harbors, soil not as good, “Poor Carolina”
South– opposite, “Rich Carolina”

5. Georgia Founded by James Oglethorpe
Place for debtors to start over, some criminals sent over from England
Also served as border area next to Spanish Florida
Oglethorpe bans slavery, rum, Catholics
People complain, becomes royal colony
Many plantations, large slave pop. later
