Superior capabilities across a spectrum of requirements
Data Services Required by every business application No business solution works without data Essential elements of an application platform Data service requirements span a broad spectrum Protect most valuable business assets e.g., Client, employee, product and financial data Data availability and performance impacts results Secure and private access affects brand value A fundamental control point Not a commodity in most use cases Unique advantages for solution developers Cross platform integration = competitive advantage To bridge from Information on Demand powered by IBM Information Services to our data server portfolio, we first describe the set of Information Services that specifically address structured information - or “Data”: Data services provide secure and efficient management of structured information (a.k.a. “data”) required by all business solutions. Application use of data falls into 2 broad categories: transaction processing and analytics (also known as BI for Business Intelligence). Data servers tuned for data analysis applications are also know as Data Warehouses. Applications in both of these categories can work with data either real-time - e.g., “online transaction processing (OLTP); or as batch processing e.g., Data Mining. Data Services include capabilities for: Managing data creation, update and deletes with transactional integrity; securing the data for properly authorized access; processing simple to complex queries; scaling to handle growth of data, transactions and users; ensuring maximum availability - including recovering from catastrophic system loss; delivering optimal performance - including CPU and memory utilization; and optimal management of logical data models on physical storage devices. No business application does anything of value without using, changing or creating data. Consequently, data services are essential elements of any application platform. Collectively, data services address a broad spectrum of requirements from business applications of all shapes and sizes. IBM offers a portfolio of data servers (also known as database management software) that provide the right capabilities across this spectrum - offering partners and clients greater flexibility to deliver an optimal solution vs. more narrow “one size fit all” portfolios from other vendors. Data services protect some of a business’ most valuable assets - such a private client and employee data and sensitive product and financial data. Security services, including Identity and access management are essential to protecting this data. Continuous data availability and delivery performance can be a vital requirement to a business solution. Any failure in these services can directly impact the ability to conduct business - or to achieve a timely advantage over the competition. Omissions or failures in Security services can have a devastating affect on a company’s short-term bottom line and long-term brand value For our clients and for IBM, the data server represents a fundamental control point. For our clients - a point of control for their business. For IBM, a point of control for maintaining and growing our relationship with, and service to, our clients. There is a growing misperception that data servers are a commodity element of a business IT infrastructure. In fact, in most business use cases the product unique capabilities of the data server offer a means of differentiating the availability and performance as well as initial and total cost of the solution. Furthermore, unlike a true commodity like a barrel of oil or ounce of gold, there is a switching cost involved in using a data server from a different supplier. This gives the incumbent data server supplier an advantage in growing the client’s use of other elements of its portfolio. Use of a data server - and the unique advantages it can provide a solution - is determined by solutions developers as well as solution operators. Characteristics of both industry standard and vendor unique capabilities of the data server can greatly impact development cost (complexity and time) as well as the solution’s ability to meet or exceed requirements. SAP is a very visible example of solution developer use of DB2 unique capabilities - e.g., “autonomics” for self configuration and self optimization for an SAP environment and Multi-Dimensional Clustering (MDC) for significantly faster query performance than other data servers. With growing integration of capabilities across the application platform - in other information management servers; in application execution and integration servers; in portals and workplaces; and in solution and systems management systems - the data server at the core of a solution has a growing impact on how clients upgrade and expand their IT systems. Examples include DB2 capabilities optimized for WebSphere and more broadly for IBM Software portfolio powering a Service Oriented Architecture - where use of XML data is fundamental and growing. As this cross-platform integration increases for IBM and among our competitors, data server incumbency is increasingly a point of competitive advantage for selling a broader middleware portfolio. The Viper release of DB2, now in a Beta test phase with hundreds of registered clients and partners, represents a game changer among data server as business solutions increasingly create and use XML data. As the industry’s first “multi-structure data server” that manages data in both relational (tabular) and XML (hierarchical) structures, DB2 Viper delivers superior management, performance and fidelity of XML data. Data exchange standards defined using XML are established and continue to grow across all industries (e.g., Insurance, Banking, Health, Gov’t). Additionally, Web service standards for finding and communicating among elements of a service oriented architecture are also defined as XML data. As a new generation of service oriented business solutions are being developed and deployed, the capabilities of DB2 Viper will provide unique advantages to developers, operators and business users. IBM leads the data server creation and evolution
Innovative Milestones 1968 1981 2006 First Hierarchical Database First IBM Relational Database First Multi-Structured Database IBM designs IMS starting in 1966 for the Apollo space program. IBM releases DB2 database following the System R proto-type. DB2 Viper first to support both relational and XML structures managed by single data server To address the growing needs of our clients and partners, IBM has been at the forefront of data management software since it created and delivered the first commercial database management software, IMS, in the late 60’s. Providing application developers with a logical view of data while handling the complex management of data on physical storage devices, IMS freed developers to focus on creating the business value of the application while benefiting from optimal performance and storage utilization achieved by top data management computer scientists. In the 70s, those specialists developed the relational model to better serve a growing class of business applications for which a table structure of rows and columns delivers superior performance and storage efficiency. Dr. Edgar Codd from IBM published the first relational model. In 2006, IBM continues its leadership role by delivering the first hybrid database management software with a DB2 data server that simultaneously supports both relational table and hierarchical XML data structures. By adding support for the XML data structure, along with the industry standard XQuery language, DB2 goes beyond competitive support for XML as a data type within the relational structure - delivering superior performance, fidelity and analytic capabilities. This multi-structure approach provides advantages to developers of Web applications and solutions implementing a Service Oriented Architecture - where XML data serving requirements continue to grow in volume and importance. Continuous IBM innovation
