The introduction of foreign languages in primary school in Italy dates back to the seventies, through teaching and methodological experiments The teaching of foreign languages is relied on to a detached elementary specialist teacher, to whom six classes are generally assigned The intervention on 'specialists' posts is introduced with the cutting season for educational savings and implemented by the Financial Law of 2005, Law no. 311 of 30 December, 2004, which in art. 1, para. 128, restricts the use of "specialists" teachers with the aim of recovering 7,100 units for 2005/06 and the same for 2006/07. It also provides 'training courses [...] whose participation is compulsory for all teachers who are not in possession of foreign language teaching’ . At primary level, English has a specific timetable: one hour of teaching for English in the first grade, two hours in the second grade, three hours in the third, fourth and fifth grades, amounting to a minimum compulsory total of hours throughout primary education

English is almost always the first foreign language studied, as it is precisely imposed in primary school. For the lowest levels of learning, Italy has set, as in most European countries, the B1 level (independent user, threshold level) of the Common European Framework .

06/08/2018 Teaching Foreign Languages in Secondary School of I degree In 1st grade secondary school, in addition to English language teaching, according to art. 9 of Legislative Decree no. 59/2004, it is mandatory the teaching of another Community language (Spanish, French, German). The weekly schedule for teaching English is three hours; The one reserved for the second Community language is two.

In the buona scuola (good school)according to the law 107/2015, English, universally adopted as international communication language, is considered compulsory, also because it is given to our students the chance to complete their career in foreign universities. In the last ten years it has been implemented the certification in the language skills.

6 06/08/2018 Direct Method It highlights aural-oral skills, no mother tongue use, no reading and writing but empathizes on effective language. Positive aspects: learn to understand a language by listening to it learn to speak language by speaking it. This is the way how children learn their mother tongue. Techniques teaching the new sound system teaching new foreign words and phrases for objects in the classroom reading and writing about material already discussed grammar taught inductively In concrete speaking in the foreign language discussing a picture using songs

10 Clil – content language integrated learning
06/08/2018 Clil – content language integrated learning It is a learning approach which aims to build language competences and learning abilities in a foreign language through the development and acquirement of educational subjects. The method focuses both on the subject and the grammar, phonetic, communicative aspects of the foreign language which in this case become the means to transfer the knowledge. It consists of specific steps: give the students a range of words ( translated in their own language) introduction of the topic Give the lesson in English Discuss and press for a group discussion Final test From 2010, in Italy all students of the last year of upper secondary education are required to learn a subject in foreign language.
