2 Where To Find Speaking Opportunities
Not-for-Profit Organizations Speakers’ Bureaus Chamber of Commerce Networking Groups Referrals Trade Associations

3 Trade Organizations Almost all have local, regional and national events. Begin with a search in industries you have the most credibility based on specialized experience, life experience and/or work experience. Look at organizations which could gain a competitive advantage for their members by leveraging your specialized knowledge and skills. So, where do you find the associations? A cheap and easy place to start is Wikipedia - _the_United_States

4 How to Begin a Relationship with a Trade Organization
After you have narrowed your search on best fit organizations, look at their websites and events posted. Examine if they have a ‘Call for Speakers’. If yes, calendar the date they release this so you can call right away. If ‘Call for Speakers’ not posted, research who the organizer is for the event and contact this person.

5 How to Begin a Relationship with a Trade Organization
Once you speak with the contact person, ask if they will have a call for speakers; if not, ask who would be the person to speak to about speaking at the event. Once you have the right person, the event organizer, send your speakers kit while you are speaking with the person to ensure it gets to them. It’s so easy for s today not to get to their intended destination. The following are some questions you will want to ask the event organizer…

6 7 Questions to Ask of the Event Organizer
“Do you hire speakers for your events? If so, what types of speakers do you look to hire for your members?” If the answer is ‘no’, inquire about any circumstances which you might pay for a speaker. Find out about any special trainings or initiatives which might be appropriate. If they expose the speaker to their audience in lieu of pay, ask, “Is there a partnership/alliance agreement by which I could include a one sheet about my program in a special mailing to the attendee list as a follow up mailing?”

7 7 Questions to Ask of the Event Organizer
“How far in advance do you book speakers and how far in advance may I present my speaking proposal?” “Can you give me an example of the most impactful speaker you have hired for your event thus far? What, in your estimation, made them exceptional?” “What is the biggest challenge facing attendees as this conference?” (Once you get accepted, there is a list of questions you will want to get answers to. Refer to Resources.) “May I have your contact details so I can stay in contact with you and be a resource to you in the mean time.”

8 Online Media/Speaker’s Kit
Note: Make this a downloadable PDF for quick access and/or a special ‘gateway’ page on your site. 1. Introduction 2. Clients 3. Bio 4. Speaker Topics/Description 5. Photos 6. One Sheet (this can stand alone) *Have a link to showcase clips of a speaking engagement.

9 Action Steps Create your personal list of 50 trade associations in excel to contact who would benefit from your expertise/message. Begin with a phone call to each event organizer. Begin a ‘drip’ campaign where you regularly stay in touch with each person while waiting for the ‘Call for Speakers’ and hiring speakers is done. This way you remain top of mind. If you do this, you will find the organizations who will hire you. Now you can use Keynote Riches™ to blow away the audience which means repeat business and massive exposure to other event organizers.
