1 Fantastic Five 1. How does altitude affect temperature?
2. Does the sun heat the Earth’s surface evenly? Why/why not? ? 3. Describe a continental polar air mass? 4. Describe a maritime tropical air mass? 5. Name at least 3 aspects of weather? No, because the angle of the sun’s rays is different at the equator and at the poles. Temperature Precipitation Air Pressure Humidity The higher you go, the cooler the air gets. It is a cold air mass passing over land. It is a warm air mass passing over water.

2 SC Science Standards S. C. Content Standards Correlation: 6.E.2: The student will demonstrate an understanding of the interactions within Earth’s systems (flow of energy) that regulate weather and climate. 6.E.2B. Conceptual Understanding: The complex patterns of changes and movement of water in the atmosphere determined by winds, landforms, ocean temperatures and currents, and convection are major determinants of local weather patterns and climate. Technology has enhanced our ability to measure and predict weather patterns. 6.E.2B.4 Construct explanations for how climate is determined in an area (including latitude, elevation, shape of the land, distance from water, global winds, and ocean currents).

3 The Learning Objective
6.E.2B.4 Construct explanations for how climate is determined in an area (including latitude, elevation, shape of the land, distance from water, global winds, and ocean currents). The Essential Question How does latitude, elevation, shape of the land, distance from water, global winds, and ocean currents impact the climate in a given area?

6 Distance from the equator measured in degrees
Closer to the equator Farther from the equator WARMER COOLER Latitude Distance from the equator measured in degrees

7 Distance from the Earth or above sea level
Altitude Cooler Warmer Distance from the Earth or above sea level

8 Marine Continental Over land Climates vary
Day temps and Night temps vary Colder winters and warmer summers Over/near water Temps do not drop much at night Mild seasons Winds bring steady precipitation Continental

9 Prevailing westerly winds
Trade winds blow from east to west in the tropical region moving warm tropical air in that climate zone. Global Winds provide a predictable pattern for the movement of air in a specific region Polar winds Prevailing westerly winds blow northeast to west in the polar region moving cold polar air in that climate zone from the poles toward the west. blow from west to east in the temperate regions

10 Streams of water that flow through oceans in regular patterns
Air masses that originate over regions of the ocean are moved with currents and affect the climate of coastal regions. Ocean Current Warm water from the tropics warm coastal areas. Cool water from the polar regions cools coastal areas. Streams of water that flow through oceans in regular patterns circulate heat energy PAGE 319- What do you see about the gulf stream?

11 The Essential Question
