9 In Biology, cells are the building blocks for every form of life
In Biology, cells are the building blocks for every form of life. All cells are classified into one of two categories… Prokaryotes (prokaryotic cells) or Eukaryotes (eukaryotic cells) And that is it!

What is a prokaryote?

12 Prokaryotes: Prokaryotes are unicellular microorganisms
Prokaryotes are bacteria! All Bacteria are prokaryotes! These cells lack (do not have) a distinct nucleus These cells lack (do not have) organelles surrounded by membranes These cells are extremely simple and small “Pro Means No!!!” Say It! Lack = does not have Micro = really small Bound = surrounded by Membrane = thin outer covering Organelles = tiny organs

13 Due to their simplicity, prokaryotes are believed by scientists to have been the earliest forms of life on the planet. They may have lived earlier than 3.77 billion years ago, possibly as early as 4.28 billion years ago, not long after the oceans formed 4.41 billion years ago, and not long after the formation of the Earth billion years ago. Bacteria (prokaryotes) are a very diverse group! They can live in the most extreme environments and very common ones as well. There are literally billions of bacteria living on/in you right now!

Cell Wall: all prokaryotes/bacteria have a cell wall. Provides support. Material can be different depending on species. Cell Membrane: adds additional support, controls what enters/leaves the cell. Cytoplasm: gel like substance that contains the structures of the cell Ribosomes: responsible for the synthesis of essential proteins/enzymes Flagellum: used for transportation through liquid based environments Nucleoid: Circular free floating DNA, not surrounded by a membrane Say It! “Pro Means No!!!”
