1 Set up page 18 for Cornell Notes with Title and EQ
Happy Wednesday Bio-ninjas! Please READ ALL sections below! Journals: Table of Contents: Right Page 19 Organelles Left Page 18 Organelle Diagram/homework Set up page 18 for Cornell Notes with Title and EQ EQ: How do the organelles work to maintain homeostasis in the cell? Due today: Annotated Cornell Notes (Eukayotes) Note Cards-word/definition/picture and color for words we’ve covered so far. Prokaryotic vs Eukaryotic Y-Chart. One Day Late: (70) Annotated Cornell Notes (Endosymbiotic Theory) Creative thinking exercise Two days Late: (50) Annotated Cornell Notes (Prokaryotes)! Prokaryote Note Cards with Picture/color Three Days Late: (0)Annotated Notes: Rule HAVE HOMEWORK OUT READY TO BE CHECKED!

2 Two Types of Cells EUKARYOTE PROKARYOTE

3 Prokaryote: Eukaryote:
Copy this chart into the left side of your notes!

4 Prokaryote: Eukaryote:
Alive (8 characteristics), DNA, RNA, Cytoplasm, Ribosomes, Cell Membrane, Microscopic *Cell Wall Prokaryote: Eukaryote: Lacks Nucleus Organelles Lack Membranes DNA is free floating Always unicellular Always bacteria Smaller than Eukaryote Reproduction is asexual (exact copies/clones) Has Nucleus Organelles have Membranes DNA is in the Nucleus Can be unicellular or multicellular Plants, Animals, Fungi, Protists Much Larger than Prokaryote Reproduction can be asexual (clones) or sexual (variations)

5 Pre-AP Left side– Cell Diagrams
Nucleolus Cytoplasm Rough ER Ribosome Cell Membrane Mitochondria Lysosome Smooth ER Golgi Bodies (Apparatus) Vacuole Flagella Nucleus

6 1. Nucleolus Largest structure inside the nucleus
Ribosome synthesis/production 1.

7 Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum
A network of membranes throughout the cytoplasm of the cell. Helps to assemble the ribosomes. 2.

8 3. Cell Membrane The cell membrane holds the cell together
Semi-permeable Allows substances into and out of the cell. 3.

9 Lysosome acts as the waste disposal system of the cell by digesting unwanted materials 4.

10 Golgi apparatus Responsible for sorting, packaging, and shipping the proteins produced in the ER. 5.

11 6. Nucleus The nucleus controls the cell.
It contains the cell’s DNA (genetic info and instructions for making proteins) 6.

12 Cytoplasm the watery gel inside a cell. It holds the ORGANelles. 7.

13 8. Ribosomes Play an important role in the synthesis of proteins.
Some ribosomes are found in the cytoplasm, but most are attached to the endoplasmic reticulum. Found in both Eukaryotes and Prokaryotes 8.

14 9. Mitochondria Organelle that produces energy for the cell.
The “power house” 9.

15 Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum
A network of membranes throughout the cytoplasm of the cell. It helps to move materials around the cell. 10.

16 Vacuoles Vacuoles are spaces in the cytoplasm where food, water and chemicals are stored 11.

17 12. Flagella Can be found in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells
Used for movement 12.

18 13. Cell Wall They make the cell strong and rigid-support
Cell Walls are found plants, fungi, bacteria and some protists NEVER found in animal cells 13.

19 Homework: Cell City Analogy Handout Color code the cells
A Cell Membrane B Cytoplasm C Mitochondria D Nucleus E Endoplasmic Reticulum F Golgi Apparatus G Ribosomes H Vacuoles I Cell Walls J Flagella Homework: Cell City Analogy Handout Color code the cells Expect a Quiz over everything we’ve covered in this unit on Friday!
