3 What you can do to support your children?
What you are doing now is important Check they can access their KDC Look at the Year 10 Course Selection Handbook (KDC website or Compass under school documentation) You are welcome to attend the subject selection day Tuesday week 4

4 What are the major choices
There are 6 compulsory units (2 English,2 Maths, 1 Science & 1 Humanities) There are 6 elective units. A unit runs for 6 months. There are 2 separate variations on a standard Year 10 which are completely different opportunities.(VCE Access & PreCAL) Everyone needs to apply for a standard Year 10 then indicate their interest in the variations. The exception to this is SEAL students who may select up to 2 VCE subjects.

5 Subject Planner English Maths Science(1) Hums(1) Electives Sem 1 Sem 2

6 SEAL student Choices for next year Science & Maths are finished at Year 10 level but look at recommendations when you get them in term 3 English Hums (1) Or VCE Hums(2) Elective/ VCE Access Electives/ VCE Access Electives Semester 1 Semester 2

7 Recommendations This helps you decide your best chance of success and are available now They will come out in third term

8 Implications For Subject Choice There are few decisions in year 9 that cant be undone
If you choose Foundation Numeracy you have to take VCAL numeracy or not do Maths in VCE Primary Teaching requires General Maths 1 & 2 All other subjects are not pre requisites for VCE but give an understanding of what is required. VCE Chemistry is needed in many Science based courses. If you choose not to do LOTE in year 10 you can’t choose it in Year 11 Maths is the one that will have implications

9 Other Opportunities That is the end of the explanation for a standard Year 10 course. It is a strong course that we wont you to choose widely if you aren’t sure and give the opportunity to pursue opportunity if you are passionate about a subject

10 Year 10 Pre CAL The Year 10 PreCAL is an exciting opportunity providing an alternative to the mainstream Year 10 Curriculum. It’s a pathway into VCAL If you don’t get into the program you can still do VCAL in Year 11 There are lots of opportunities that most of us would enjoy some of (those opportunities)

11 What you need to do for VCE Access
Be in the top 20 percentile of students academically at KDC Have a special talent or passion for a subject Understand that your place in the subject will be determined by availability of spaces. If you move into VCE Access it will be very difficult to change at a later date. Do not list down subjects that you are not really interested in. Students may choose a VET subject as part of VCE access. (this requires a separate application form) Sometimes there is more opportunity that others.
