2 Background Aristotle was a Greek philosopher who discovered the parts that made an effective argument When we know these parts, we can effectively construct an argument with the purpose of influencing our audience

3 Rhetoric Rhetoric is communication from one person to another with the purpose of influencing the listener’s overall understanding of the topic being discussed

4 Types There are several elements that make up rhetoric: Ethos Pathos
Logos Telos Kairos

5 Ethos Ethos refers to the credibility or trustworthiness of the speaker. Ethos can also be attributed to the author’s perspective. Ethos means convincing by the author’s character.

6 Pathos Pathos refers to the emotional appeal of the speech on the audience. Pathos is often contrasted with Logos. Pathos means persuading by appealing to the listener’s emotions.

7 Logos Logos refers to the logic or reasoning in an argument. Logos also refers to the structure and content of the text itself. Logos means persuading by the use of reason.

8 Telos Telos refers to the purpose or attitude of a speech. Aristotle believed that speakers should have a clear Telos, but an audience may have its own purpose that is different from the speaker’s purpose. Telos means persuading by emphasizing the purpose of the speech.

9 Kairos Kairos refers to parts of a speech that alludes to the setting, time, and place that a speech occurs. Kairos means influencing through the use of setting.

10 Application Watch and listen to a few speeches. Identify at least one rhetorical method and how it is used in each speech. Refer to your notes if you need help.
