4. Foreign Language
You must continue language taken in high school or begin an alternative language at Elementary I level (101/100).
If you are bilingual, you can take a proficiency test to waive the language requirement.
Spanish is the only language offered every semester at every level. Plan ahead of which classes you will be taking each semester in order to complete the requirement on time.
You can take the Spanish placement test online. All other placement tests need to be arranged through the Modern Languages department.

5. Foreign Language
If you test out of language classes or get the language requirement waived, you are still responsible for the units.
For example: If you tested into 201 and do not need to take 101[100] or 102[200], then you will have 8 units that you need to add to your elective units.

6. Physical Education (P.E.)
Each student is required to complete four activities of physical education.
Students may select one credit of recreation skill and one dance class to meet the requirement.
You can only repeat one activity, and you must repeat it at a higher level.
Credit for varsity sports may be substituted for two regularly scheduled physical education classes.
Students 21 years of age at the time of entrance to Biola are exempt from the PE requirement.
If you are exempt, these four credits must be fulfilled with electives.

8. Bible Prereqs for Theo I and II are Bib Interp and Foundations.
Prereqs for Acts are Bib Interp, Foundations, and New Testament.
Most upper division electives have Bib Interp, Foundations, Theo I, and Theo II as prereqs.
Need to take a Bible class every semester.
No Sociology-specific integration seminar.
Bible classes cannot be taken for elective credit.
“Evangelism & Missions Exposition” will be replacing BBST 306 Acts requirement.

10. Sociology
SOCI 220 is a requirement for most 300/400 level Sociology classes.
All students who entered Fall 2014 and after must take an Inequality Elective (302, 336, 340, 342, 352, or 454).
Don’t take Theory and Methods the same semester.
You must find your own internship for the internship classes. Start early.
You can do an internship for SOCI elective credit (SOCI 470 Independent Study).

11. Sociology
Students must have at least 27 upper division (300- or 400-level) courses in the major to graduate.
Any course completed at a community college is considered lower division (100- or 200-level).
At least 15 credits (upper division level) in the major field must be taken at Biola.

12. Transferring Classes
No more than 70 credits can be transferred from a two-year college.
Correspondence classes (LSU, Taylor, etc) are not permitted in the semester a student plans to graduate.
A minimum of 30 credits must be taken at Biola University, at least 15 credits in the major and 15 credits in Bible.

16. Electives
The non-music major is limited to a maximum of 8 credits in applied music.
The non-physical education major is limited to 8 credits of PE.
Courses cannot be remedial.
Students should have courses they are planning to transfer in as electives pre-approved by the Office of the Registrar.

17. Writing Competency Requirement
Purpose: The Writing Competency Requirement (WCR) is a University assessment of students written ability in the following 3 areas:
Written communication
Critical thinking
Information literacy

18. Writing Competency Requirement
 cite references (secondary data) and/or primary data you’ve collected
(e.g. interviews, fieldnotes, survey data, content analysis, etc.).
Writing Competency Requirement
Fulfilling the requirement: You are required to submit 2 sociology research papers that cite references (secondary data) and/or primary data you’ve collected to demonstrate your writing skills. You may choose to submit a paper from 2 of the following courses: Social Theory, Methods, an Inequalities course, or a Sociology elective. The deadlines for submission should be one year before your anticipated graduation date (October 1st for Fall and March 1st for Spring).

19. Writing Competency Requirement
How it is assessed: Two sociology professors read and assess your papers based on the following criteria:
Necessary & Appropriate Information Access
Controlling Idea, Hypothesis or Organizing Question
Context & Audience
Structure & Content Development
Effective, Ethical & Legal Use of Evidence
Control of Syntax & Mechanics
If you do not pass the first time, you will need to re-write the papers.

20. Graduation Petition
You must submit a Graduation Petition form to the Office of the Registrar one year prior to graduation. Petitions submitted during the semester of graduation will be considered late and a late graduation petition fee of $200 will need to be paid at time of submission.
Fill it out as much as possible, meet with a PAA, then take to Myrna Paige, Sociology Department Administrator, to give to the Department Chair to sign.
