1 Bureau of Meteorology Training Centre Melbourne, Australia
CoE Presentations VLMG – 5: Beijing CMA R.Deslandes

2 Objectives Review activities over the last 12 months
How can V-Lab better support us? What worked? What didn’t work? Future plans? Future plans VLMG – 5: Beijing CMA R.Deslandes

3 Activities - Classroom
Graduate Diploma of Meteorology (BIP-M + specialisation) (Feb - Nov) 2009: Australia (14), Fiji (4), Vanuatu (1), Singapore (1), Hongkong (1) 2010: Australia (22), Fiji (3), Samoa (1), Singapore (1), Hongkong (1) Basic & advanced satellite meteorology WMO: Southern hemisphere TC workshop (29 Sept – 9 Oct) 2009: 14 participants Australasia and Africa Dvorak technique, microwave imagery, scatterometer data VLMG – 5: Beijing CMA R.Deslandes

4 Activities Classroom Advanced Forecaster Course (31 May – 11 June 2010) Vesa Nietosvaara VLMG – 5: Beijing CMA R.Deslandes

5 Activities: RFG 8 June 2010: AFC - Regional satellite chart discussion held between Bureau Forecasters & Forecasters from Met Service New Zealand. Online discussion led by: - Bodo Zeschke (BoM) - Chris Webster (Met Services NZ) VLMG – 5: Beijing CMA R.Deslandes

9 What worked / did not work well?
 Support from JMA & EumetCAL & VLab team!  The RFG is a good “vehicle” for (re)-building and reinforcing conceptual models and better use of satellite products to mitigate forecaster de-skilling (atrpohying of skills)! Some of the best sessions on the AFC were “virtual sessions”. If used appropriately, software to support virtual sessions (such as “Goto Webinar”) can enhance learning.   Need to revise conceptual models and use diagnostics that reinforce conceptual models.  Beware of looping imagery in virtual sessions due to bandwidth issues / line speed! VLMG – 5: Beijing CMA R.Deslandes

10 Approaches / tools that worked well
 Resources that serve as both operational & training tools will enhance the transfer of learning into the operational environment (SATrep online is a good example).  Tools that allow for direct comparison of “like with like” (comparing apples with apples) - Comparing synthetic satellite data from NWP models with “real satellite data” VLMG – 5: Beijing CMA R.Deslandes

11 Plans – future activities
Strategic: Developing resources and tools that support a continuous learning culture. Re-developing training resources that have been used exclusively for ab-initio training so that they are available to a wider community of users. E-learning strategy: Moodle implementation: Corporately-supported internal & external servers. Building a wider RFG community (Asia-Pacific – Southern Hemisphere) VLMG – 5: Beijing CMA R.Deslandes

12 Meteorologist Course Number 56
Date Name of training event Topics to be addressed Lecturers Classroom courses Until mid-November Meteorologist Course Number 56 Various subjects utilising satellite imagery, including Advanced Satellite Meteorology (BZ) and Tropical Cyclone Meteorology (BZ) Bodo Zeschke (BZ) Distant learning courses Likely to commence within the next three months Webinar sessions on Water Vapour imagery Water Vapour imagery training disseminated to Australian Regional Forecasting Centres originally. Potential for collaboration with overseas Forecasting Centres also. Bodo Zeschke RFG events Within the next two months Updating competencies of Satellite Meteorology lectures at the Bureau of Meteorology Training Centre (BMTC) Incorporate the updated WMO 258 Section 7.9 competencies into the Basic and Advanced Satellite Meteorology courses at BMTC ongoing BMTC Moodle lecture creation / multimedia integration environment. Development of a Moodle “shopfront” to the Bureau of Meteorology Training Centre, including a VLab web interface. Merrin Bennett, Mick-Pope (BMTC) VLMG – 5: Beijing CMA R.Deslandes

13 How can help? We need to make sure that we are proactive in selling the clear benefits of “membership” of the V-Lab program. Clearly we are seeing: Engagement Sharing of expertise Leveraging of resources An agreed / supported process for building the RFG’s? (through the WMO PR’s?) VLMG – 5: Beijing CMA R.Deslandes
