2 WHY BERLIN? The new Eduqas study in breadth unit ‘The Development of Germany, ’ covering the Weimar, Nazi and FDR/DDR periods up to unification. Experience the culture of a European capital city. Links to other areas of the curriculum.

3 TRAVEL Outward: Thursday 12th Jan.
Be at school by 8.30 am (30 minutes before departure at 9:00 hrs. by coach to Luton Airport) Meet at front steps main entrance Register with your group leader: JDS, CLY, DJN. Passport + European Health Insurance Card (to be handed in during trip information meeting). Non EU passports see me at the end for additional form. Medical form and Code of Conduct Card (to be handed in before trip information meeting).

13 CODE OF CONDUCT Be polite to all staff accompanying the trip at all times. Listen to members of staff when required to do so and ensure that the instructions are carried out immediately. Be respectful of members of the public whenever you are in contact with them (e.g. on the train, in shops/ museums) Listen carefully to meeting times and always be punctual. Listen carefully to and follow the hotel rules given to you on arrival. Smoking, drug-taking and drinking of alcohol is not permitted at any time. Purchasing of alcohol, cigarettes and other illegal goods is not permitted.

14 HEALTH AND SAFETY Whilst travelling on the coach always ensure that you are seated and that your seat belt is on. On the train remain inside the cabin area unless instructed to go on deck by a member of NBS staff or a member of the crew in an emergency. Ensure that any rubbish is put in the nearest bin. Because they drive on the right in mainland Europe double check whenever you cross a road. When you are given permission to go out in Berlin always stay in groups of 3 to 5. If you feel unwell let a member of staff know right away.

16 ITINERY Friday 13th 10.30 – Sachsenhausen Memorial centre & museum
Sachsenhausen was a concentration camp established in 1936, 35km north of Berlin. Students will see the horrifying conditions in which the inmates lived as well as artefacts

17 ITINERY Friday 13th 14.00 – Wannsee Conference Memorial House
The site of the Wannsee Conference at which high ranking civil servants and SS-officers decided to deport all European Jews to the East in order to murder them.

18 ITINERY Friday 13th 19.00 – Bowling at Alexanderplatz
A 2 hour session at a conveniently located bowling centre in the centre of Berlin. George Lopez got the highest score last year – will it be you this year?

19 ITINERY Saturday 14th 10.00 – Berlin Wall guided walking tour
A 4 hour tour of the Berlin wall covering its history and impact during the period 1961 to This will include a trip to Checkpoint Charlie.

20 ITINERY Saturday 14th 15.00 – Berlin Wall museum
An open-air exhibition documenting the impact of a divided city and paying tribute to the victims of Communist tyranny and those who risked their lives

21 ITINERY Saturday 14th 21.15 – Berlin TV Tower
The television tower in the centre of Berlin is a famous landmark standing at 368m (the fourth tallest in Europe) built in the 1960s by the East German government. Panoramic views of the city.

22 ITINERY Sunday 15th 10.00 – Story of Berlin Exhibition
This exhibition provides an insight into the life of Berlin over a series of historical periods. In particular, an illustration of what life was like on either side of the Berlin Wall/atomic shelter.
