1 Capitalization for First Grade

2 Definitions: Noun: A person, place or thing.
Example: friend, school, or classroom Proper Noun: A PARTICULAR person, place or thing. Example: Rachael, McDonalds, or Eiffel Tower

3 Rules: ALWAYS capitalize the word, “I”! *I enjoy the outdoors.
ALWAYS capitalize proper nouns. *My friend’s name is Jackie. ALWAYS capitalize beginning words of a sentence. *Remember to eat your vegetables.

4 More Rules: Always capitalize the names of countries and languages.
*We live in America and speak English. Always capitalize the first letter of the days of the week and months of the year. *Today is Wednesday, October 12, 2011.

5 Let’s play a game: We are going to join Roy the Zebra to help Zara’s dreams come true. We have to capitalize some letters to make sentences correct and identify proper nouns! Let’s go! (

6 Great job! Now, let us try another game. You may have to think a little harder and remember other capitalization rules! Are you up for the challenge?

7 Practice: henry wants to ride his bike. my mom is a good cook.
school is almost over. ryan is playing with his trucks. mary’s favorite toy is her doll.

8 More practice: ron speaks english and french. we live in the missouri.
today is wednesday. nancy and i enjoy riding bikes. fall is the most colorful season of them all.
