The sacraments we will be discussing are the sacraments of initiation! Which of the sacraments are the initiation? Hint= there are 3 Baptism Eucharist Confirmation

5 Baptism The 1st sacrament of initiation “To plunge or immerse”
The beginning of our personal relationship w/God Symbols=Shell & baptismal waters- we will rise to a new life “At that time Jesus arrived from Galilee & came to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. But John tried to make him change his mind. I ought to be baptized by you, John said, & yet you have come to me!” Jesus’ baptism by John the Baptist-Matthew 3:13-19 This verse is showing the respect that John had for Jesus

Baptism of Repentance is ppl. being baptized in order to have their sins forgiven This was also a way in which ppl. could confess their sins Baptism of Initiation is for us to start our relationship w/God & to start the creation of our faith Both share that we all have the belief in God & our faith in God’s work

12 Eucharist The 2nd sacrament of Initiation
During Eucharist the actual body & blood of Jesus Christ becomes present Brings us closer to God Transubstantiation- the transfer of the items of bread & wine at Mass to the Body & Blood of Jesus Christ. Beginning- 6:18 Symbols=Bread, wine, wheat, & grapes

13 Eucharist “Then he took a piece of bread, gave thanks to God, broke it, & gave it to them, saying, This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in memory of me.” The Last Supper- Luke 22 This verse is showing us that God is giving himself to us by us having God w/in us

The Sacrament of mature Christian commitment This is saying that this is your faith A deepening of our baptismal promises. Symbols=Fire & a descending dove.

18 Confirmation “Then they saw what looked like tongues of fire which spread out & touched each person there.” Descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost- Acts 2 This was God bestowing power to be able to preach & share that Jesus was the risen lord

Sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit & are strengthened in Christian life This ceremony takes place generally around the age of 15 (Sophomore in HS) Confirmation gives us the deeper belief & commitment to the Catholic faith
