IN CLASS READING PAGES 187-192
On your table post-its, you should be tracking the answers to the following questions: In what ways is Pecola a victim? How has Pecola been treated throughout the novel? In what ways is Pecola a scapegoat*? *scapegoat* – a person blamed for the “sins” of others One person will be on the Elmo to track evidence as we read.
11
SUMMER READER’S THEATER & REREAD
We are going to have two readers read the conversation that begins with, “Did you hear about that girl?” on page 188 As we read, the post-its should still be going! But now, you’re tracking new evidence for the following questions: What is most significant about the conversation on page ? What does the conversation show about how people are viewing Pecola and her pregnancy? How do Frieda and Claudia react to the conversation being had? I need a new person at the Elmo! If you have time after this section to begin the section on Pecola’s friend, then go forth! If not, there is time built in tomorrow’s plans for you to go over it.

VOCAB #2 Ria, the cat, spends her days acting on her own volition, sleeping when and where she wants, eating when she wants, and NEVER doing tricks on command. As a kitten, her owner sanctified each experience, showering her with play toys and making Ria feel valued and special. As Ria got older, she received less attention and demonstrated her disdain by scratching and clawing on her owner’s furniture. Now she is characterized by frailty and weakness, spending much of her time misanthropically hissing and growling at anyone who walks past her. The transformation of Ria’s attitude is a poignant reminder to the owner that things have changed in her kitten’s life. The owner acquiesces to the idea that Ria may never be her playful kitten self again. Still, she reminisces about their good times together, speaking eloquently about her pet at every opportunity.
