1 Iowa ABC Book Prepare to be AMAZED!!!! By: Thomas Conn

2 A is for Albert the Bull Albert the bull stands in what is now the Albert the Bull Park and Campground just outside of Audubon, Iowa. 20,000 people visit him every year. Albert the bull is the World’s Largest Bull. He is 30 feet tall, and 33 feet long. He weighs 45 tons, and is mostly all solid concrete. He has been located in Audubon since 1964.

3 B is for Black Hawk When chief Black Hawk was very young he became a brave. Black Hawk was a war chief who led his Sauk tribe to war. Black Hawk went to prison for fighting for his land in Iowa. He refused to give in without a fight.

4 C is for Cardiff the Giant
Cardiff the giant Giant was found in The length of his body is 10 feet,4 1/2 inches. It weighed 2,990 pounds. It was found near Fort Dodge, Iowa.

5 D is for Des Moines Des Moines was found in Des Moines is Iowa’s state capitol. Des Moines’s population is 203,433. Des Moines is located in Polk County.

6 E is for Elmer Powers Years of struggle: from Elmer Powers, is a story of struggle, strife, and perseverance for one Iowa farmer. The 1930’s in the United States was a time of movement and of change.

7 F is for Fort Madison The population of Fort Madison is 2,000. Fort Madison was built in Fort Madison was the location of the first U.S. military fort in the upper Mississippi region: a replica of the fort stands along the river.

8 G is for Gypsum The colors of Gypsum is: yellow, tan, blue, pink, brown , reddish brown, gray ,and white. Gypsum occurs in nature as flattened and often twinned crystals and transparent cleavable masses called selenite. Selenite contains no significant selenium; rather both substances were named from the ancient Greek word for the moon.

9 H is for Herbert Hoover Herbert Hoover was born August 10, He died October 20, He was the thirty-first president of the United States. In 1803, the supreme court made a historic decision with the court case Marbury vs. Madison. The case involved many of the key players in the early republic including John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and Chief Justice John Marshall.

10 I is for Iowa The capital of Iowa is Des Moines. The state flower is wild rose. The state bird is eastern goldfinch. Iowa’s state colors are red, white, and blue. The nickname for Iowa is Hawkeye State.

11 J is for James Van Allen James Van Allen was born on September 7,1914. He died August 9,2006. He was known for Van Allen radiation belts. His notable awards were “Time” magazine man of the year,1960. National Medal of science,1987.

12 K is for Keokuk Keokuk has 4,878 males. It has 5,519 females. Keokuk is a city in the southeastern part of the U.S. state of Iowa and one of the county seats of Lee county. Keokuk along with the city of Fort Madison is a principal city of the Fort Madison-Keokuk Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Lee county, Iowa and Clark county , Missouri.

13 Iowa produces a tenth of the nations food supply ,the value of Iowa’s manufactured products is that twice that of it’s agriculture. Iowa raises: cows, pigs, chickens, hogs, horses, and sheep. Iowa stands in a class by itself as an agricultural state. Its farms sell over $10 billion worth of crops and livestock annually. L is for Livestock

14 M is for Meriwether Lewis
Meriwether Lewis was born August 18, He died October 11, He was an explorer, soldier, politician, best known for his role as leader of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. He was also known for the Corps of Discovery, with William Clark, whose mission was to explore the territory of the Louisiana Purchase. He established trade and sovereignty over the natives near the Missouri River, and claimed the Pacific Northwest and Oregon territory for the United States before European Natives.

15 Norman Borlaug was born March 25, 1914 Cresco, Iowa
Norman Borlaug was born March 25, 1914 Cresco, Iowa. He died September 12,2009. He is known for His role in the Green Revolution ,helping develop semi-dwarf, high field, disease –resistant wheat varieties ,and as a founder of the world Food Prize. His notable awards are Nobel Peace Prize, Presidential Medal of Freedom, Public Welfare Medal, National Medal of science, Congressional Gold Medal. N is for Norman Borlaug

16 O is for Oakland Oakland is a city located along the west Nishnabotna River in Pottawattamie County, Iowa, United States. It’s population is 1,487. In Oakland water is 0.0 sq. miles and 1,106 feet. Land is 1.5 square miles in Oakland.

17 P is for Pioneer Life Pioneer settlers traveling to Iowa used many different kinds of transportatation. Transportation in Iowa changed very rapidly during the 19th century. The first settlers arrived by wagon, steamboat, or stagecoach. Railroad lines were constructed in eastern Iowa during the 1850’s. By 1895, there were five major railroad companies operating in Iowa.

18 Q is for Quaker Oats Company
The Quaker oats company was founded in The Quaker oats company is an American food conglomerate. It has been owned by PepsiCo since Their yearly income is 10,081,972,025.

19 R is for Robert Fulton Robert Fulton was born November 14, He died February 24, Robert Fulton was an American Engineer and inventor who is widely credited with developing the first commercially successful steamboat.

20 The mayor of Sioux City is Mike Hobart. The city manager is Paul Eckert. It was founded in It was incorporated in It’s population is 85,013. Sioux City is a city in Plymouth and Woodbury counties in the western part of the U.S. state of Iowa. S is for Sioux City

21 T is for Thomas Edison Thomas Edison was born February 11, He died October 18, He was an inventor, scientist, and businessman. He developed many devices that greatly influenced life around the world, including the phonograph, the motion picture camera, and a long-lasting light bulb.

22 Underwood is in Pottawattamie county
Underwood is in Pottawattamie county. It’s in North America, United States. It’s population is 515. It is 12 miles North East from Council Bluffs. U is for Underwood

23 V is for Villisca Axe Murder House
Almost 97 years ago, long before serial killers had become a way of life, two adults and 6 children were found murdered in their beds in the small mid-western town of Villisca, Iowa. During the passing weeks, life in this small town changed a lot. As residents of this small town reinforced locks, openly carried weapons and huddled together while sleeping, newspaper reporters and private detectives flooded the streets. Rumors and suspicion ran rampant among friends and families. Bloodhounds were brought in. Law enforcement agencies from neighboring counties and states joined forces. Hundreds of interviews filled thousands of pages. And yet, the murders remained unsolved, the murderer unpunished.

24 W is for William Clark William Clark was born August 1,1770. He died September 1,1838. William Clark was an American explorer, soldier, Indian agent, and territorial governor. He was the 2nd Governor of Missouri Territory. William Clark was born in Caroline County, Virginia, on August 1,1770,the ninth of the ten children of John and Ann Rogers Clark.

26 Y is for Yetter Yetter is in Calhoun county. It’s population is 49. There are 21 families in Yetter. Yetter has sq. kilometers of land area. It’s also 0.1 sq. mile of land area. 0 sq. kilometers is the amount of water surface.

27 Z is for Zebulon Pike Zebulon Pike was born January 5, He died April 27, Zebulon Pike was an American soldier and explorer for whom Pikes Peak in Colorado is named. His Pike Expedition mapped much of the southern portion of the Louisiana Purchase. Zebulon’s Father, also named Zebulon Pike, was an officer in the continental Army under General George Washington and served in the United States Army after the Revolutionary war.
